Hi folks

In this month’s SA Computer Magazine there is a good article regarding ADSL and MyADSL. It gives a good rundown of concerns regarding the service, and provides views from all sides. If you can get hold of a copy be sure to read the article and see if you agree with Steven White’s comment: “When used for what it was intended ADSL works well. We tried to explain that to the MyADSL people, but they just do not understand”.

Can't remember ever reading what ADSL is intended for other than reliable high speed broadband 24/7 internet connectivity. Be it for sending e-mail, downloading e-mail (a form of abuse according to Telkom), browsing the web, managing a server in the US via SSH or playing games.

That is all I'm using Telkom's version of ADSL for, and the results are varied.

Often I feel like complimenting them with the recent few days of high speed connectivity - just to find that Google times out again :-) Or I can't download my e-mail from Roodepoort to Pretoria.

Maybe somebody at Telkom will be so kind as to tell us what ADSL is supposed to be used for?

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

Steven White is away with the fairies - I have written this before and

I hope he can understand a few points.

1. adsl is not a Telkom invention.

2. adsl was designed to provide a cheap INEXPENSIVE link between the user and the carrier using existing copper cables. That's it.

3. adsl is cheap for the carrier and should be cheap for the user.

4. We are complaining about what Telkom does with the adsl link.
(no need to repeat all our complaints)

5. The intention of adsl is to provide the user with a high speed high volume connection 24/7 -
Telkom adsl does not do this.

No, still don't get it ? [}:)]

Maybe this will help .............

Next time you buy a new car, my pal will make some mods for you.

You will be limited to 100km per day.

No matter where you are your engine will cut out every hour on the hour.

Once you have done a 1000km in a month your car shuts down. We lock the petrol cap and you must wait until month end when the cap is unlocked.

If you drive into any playcentre [:X] you will be punished - your steering wheel will automatically lock - a technician can be called to unlock your wheel - the cost will be for your account.

Oh, The car will cost you an extra R200 000.00 to cover his expenses.
(My pal needs to make a profit you understand)

Now we could do this if we were the only supplier of cars in ZA.

Do you get it now ?? [}:)]

No, still don't understand ... mmmm I give up [:I]

Mr White, Keep going with that attitude and see how many subscribers remain come Feb 2004 :)

hehe, bring it on Sentech :) Goodbye diginet, goodbye ADSL, goodbye landline and best of all GOODBYE TELSKUM!!!

Yes, typical... for what TELKOM intends it to be used for! Seems most ISP's in the WORLD intend for it to be used for progression, whilst Telkom opts for regression - for us - whilst their pockets get fatter. Once again, if the government isn't responsible and does something, a guilt trip isn't going to work. I've recently become a convert to the concept of Karma, and Telkom, the afterlife is not going to be a good place for you and all responsible to reside. Repent and there might be an official pardon from the 'One Above'.

To the MyADSL people? aka YOUR CLIENTS! If it were a group of 10 people, maybe he'd have a point, but this is a group of (im not exactly sure of the user-base) over 600 people!

May I also state that often journalism in this country is pathetic. Get your hands on a magazine from the UK (I quote this as this is where my experience lies as I lived there for 8 years) and note that to write critically (where appropriate) is seen as a vital part of well-written journalism. In this country, it's often the opposite and very little considered contentious is mentioned. Big business buys many journalists out, or they are afraid of never being commissioned again, due to the industry being fairly small, and a possible blacklisting.

To the journalistic industry: the responsibility is with you all. An attitude needs to be enforced with no compromise in order to get the ball rolling and for this to be considered the norm. On the flipside, it must be tough when you've bills to pay, and if intimidation really is as I've been led to believe by some working in the industry.

Thank goodness for this site - the internet - and my freedom to be as critical as I like. We need to see more of this in the mainstream media.

Isn’t it about time Telkom starts providing services its customers want instead of pushing services out which they basically force us to use for whatever it is they feel comfortable it should be used for? The arrogance is mind blowing! If the government had the good fortune of its citizens in mind Telkom would have been forced to install broadband fibre optic connectivity into every house and every shanty in the country at cost price…

If it wants to make a profit then Telkom must compete against something…

Quite true Mr White - since ADSL was never intended to be a broadband service - arrogance of a monopoly at work again I'm afraid.

Mr White and his team appear to have spent more time working out how to hobble the ADSL service sufficiently to prevent it from being a suitable alternative to Diginet than on providing a proper ADSL service.

That was his brief and he met it superbly - like a poodle trained to piss on command - totally unproductive in the broader perspective.

Robin - as pi**ed off as everyone else about Telkom SUPERSLOW ADSL !!!

So basicly, he is saying is that MyADSL are all idiots?

Great PR that...

Well yes, his intent was to make Telkom look like the good guys and MYADSL look like the unappreciative bad guys.

But little does he know he has actually shown everyone how little he really knows about ADSL and it's intended use.

Poor guy, I think he's out of his depth.

He understands what *his* (Namely Telkom's) intended use for the service is perfectly.

They should just name it TelkomDSL and not ADSL because by the standards set by the rest of the world the service they provide can hardly be considerd broadband ADSL, and barely even Internet at all - its more like AOL or Compuserv for SA on a fast connection.
