Why should it have won?
I don't most of you understand the rating of coty.
It's the pick of the bunch in each segment.
The rating is based on how well a particular car stands up to the other cars in their segment.
Eg golf is the best in its segment, lightweight, efficiecient, good looking etc.
It's not comparing a Porsche to a Renault.
IMO the Porsche is the clear winner here which I agree with.
The Volvo stands no chance against its competitors.

Seriously though, the V40 is an epic car and looks very good to me. In my opinion the Golf edges it out a bit, but I still think that in a different country with less anti-Volvo bias it would have had a better rating than it did here.

I think the competition for the V40 is the A-class, 1 Series and A3... Not the Golf. It would probably be my pick of that bunch, because I like to be slightly different and I like the looks and technology more than the rest.

I would also pick the Volvo, but eish, trade in value is almost as bad as Alpha.

Well to some degree yes, but in terms of the section of the market, it is the V40, A3, 1 Series, Golf, and a couple more. While VW might not be as posh as Audi or whatever else, the cars target similar audiences I think and offer similar features. The A3 is just a more expensive Golf anyway so...

funny thing is, in the last CAR magazine they have the Top 12 buys for 2014, in many of the segments they don't even have VAG products in their list, it is the readers choice all the time.
So maybe the Car of the Year awards is just a reflection of how dull and dimwitted the SA public has become.
