We all know that taxis would crop up at the top of every South Africa drivers ''hate'' list, but I find it pointless to complain anymore as, a) they won't change & b) government/traffic authorities will do nothing to ensure they change their on-the-road behaviour. But one thing that really, REALLY irks me and is becoming very common on our roads, is the incorrect use of indicators.

By definition, an indicator is intended to indicate your intention to turn/change lanes to road users behind you. A warning. BUT, it seems this escapes the vast majority of road users. The amount of times I've just had folks bomb on the brakes in front of me, indicate, and then turn is just ridiculous. Indicating as you turn is pointless as you are doing what you were supposed to warn me about a few hundred meters up the road so I could a) prepare myself to
stop, b) change lanes to continue my progress, or c) backoff in case you have to come to a stand-still before turning.

Or, when you are at a fourway stop and someone hoots at you because you ''jumped the stop street and cut him off''. What the clown failed to do was inidcate. By sitting at a stop street with no indicators on I am going to assume that you are going straight and not attempting to turn across my path and so I'm gonna move off.

What is sorely lacking on our roads is a viable traffic force that actively enforces the rules of our roads. It's no good sitting in a bush with a camera. Drivers get used to that and back off momentarily, clear the camera, and then continue to drive like they are the only vehicle on the road. And for me, the correct use of indicators is a major point as I'm sure many a bumper bashing can be avoided with the correct use of indicators. Let other people on the road know what you are going to do instead of surprising them.

We have horrible drivers in SA.

Friend of the family from the UK is a truck driver for a living, he was totally freaked the first time he drove in SA.

I myself spent two years in the UK, and yes, we are terrible. Aggressive, selfish and almost universal disregard for road laws. I myself have cut a corner here or there - mostly when I work late and the roads are quiet - but when there are other road users about, I like to think that I drive courteously and within the laws of the road.

Funny you should say that. Last night I almost drive into a tiny Hyundai Atos when the stupid driver decided to just turn right into a side road on Conrad without indicating. He/She didn't even brake (at least I would have seen brake lights), but just decelerated by taking his foot off the accelerator (on an incline).

I'm entitled to drive in the fast lane at 100km/h, I'm not breaking the law. Screw you for wanting to go fast, YOU are breaking the law!
To hell with you man! I did indicate - didn't I? (so what if it was at the same moment as changing lanes) Therefore I'm entitled to change lanes, turn - at least I indicated :wtf:

That is the problem, this whole notion of entitlement.

Not really...Have you ever driven in European countries like Greece and Italy? Now thats freaky...I personally think most SA drivers are semi decent.

This really gets me too. I don't understand why people just don't indicate - it is so easy! I don't even notice that I am indicating anymore, it's just a natural habit to.

Erm, you are actually the one in contravention of the traffic laws. Just goes to show how little people know about the traffic laws...

I was a passenger in a colleagues car yesterday and it really got to me. The guy changed lanes all day without indicating. When I asked why he didnt indicate, he said he didnt need to because he checked his mirror and there was no one behind him...Flawed logic but I asked him that he indicate all the time to create a good habit.

He probably just thought to himself "what a dildo" lol

I've noticed that many South African drivers tend to use indicators to indicate what they have just completed...

No, DJ, you've got it wrong. With Sefrican drivers, it's brushing the indicator lever as they turn the steering wheel that makes you think that...

Barcelona, very fast but very good drivers, stop for pedestrians and do not break the law.

Or asian countries... I will never drive in Bali.

Wuhan in China, gave me nightmares.
In the city there is 2 lanes and no parking, people just park on the road effectively turning it into a single lane, quite scary when you see trucks coming at you.

I think he was explaining the mentality of other drivers... well I hope so.

Haha, glad to see I'm not the only one that gets irritated by this.

It is such a simple thing to do. Quite literally stretch your index/middle finger and flick a lever a couple of hundred metres before you turn. Viola. At worst you I dunno, burn a kilojoule of energy, at best you avert an accident.

He was explaining the thought train of those that do as they please.

+1. Gauteng drivers might be more aggresive but the worste drivers are from the Cape provinces...

I travel to Gauteng fairly regularly, and have definitely noticed more indicator use there than down here in Cape Town. The drivers are far more aggressive in Joburg than Cape Town, however, at least you know what the drivers intention is up there. Here, you've got to guess...

I've never understood the problem with just using indicators as intended. Or why people find 4-way stops so complicated and bewildering. Or what's so difficult about merging onto a freeway.

The drivers in the UK are certainly usually patient and courteous. But I've regularly seen them do totally insane things like simply stopping in the middle of a roundabout to ask someone on the side of the road for directions. They just generally stop wherever they please and everyone else must just wait.

It must partly go back to the driving instruction. My instructor didn't tolerate not indicating every time and in good time to warn other drivers. In fact he didn't tolerate any kind of slow or lazy driving. Trundle along at 50kph in a 60 zone without a darn good reason and you got a very loud lecture on keeping to the posted limit. But part of it is that people are lazy and incompetent.

That's one thing I hate in the UK. Damn drivers stop when I'm trying to cross the road through traffic (did depend on the area though; some places they didn't stop). At a pedestrian crossing I expect them to stop, but otherwise I have functioning sensors capable of plotting a path across the road taking the cars into account.
