SA faces $1bn World Cup stadium bill

Yeah, 'cause we all know there is an endless supply of money available, so if a few billion gets wasted here and there it doesnt matter right?

The different government departments do a good enough job wasting money on their own, don't blame it on sport

8 Billion on a sporting event that is not going to improve the lives of South Africans is a waste. If we didn't have massive problems that could use that money then why not spend it on some sporting even?

The hope of most realistic people was that the WC might spark the government into fixing some of the problems experienced everyday by locals, but that hope is getting smaller by the day.

You will have to forgive some of us for thinking past the "cool, I can see a world cup game without having to travel overseas" mentality.

Sporting events is a great way of distracting the mind's of the voter's come next election time.

Yeah, well we seem to disagree on this, but that’s fair; I just know from my experience as a person that works and tenders on government contracts, that there is massive wastage of money (under spending, or incorrect, inappropriate spending) and that throwing more money at them isn’t going to solve SA’s problems; if they employed competent people, well, maybe then!? As another example I saw a Sunday newspaper yesterday writing about R100m forensic DNA testing equipment standing and not being used by the police, so in my opinion, why give them more money?

I just believe that money spent on sport is not necessarily a waste especially considering how I’ve argued it above(just my opinion!); so this:

...You will have to forgive some of us for thinking past the "cool, I can see a world cup game without having to travel overseas" mentality.

…is a little patronising
