SA falling behind as Minister fiddles

This report is a step in the right direction in that the opposition questions government in public. But so much more could be done.

Just wish that parliament would start using their authority and not fear cabinet / executive / minister and clearly monitor the DOC and ICASA in terms of effectiveness, i.e. withhold their budget approvals if they dont measure up, legalise the independence of ICASA from the DOC, publicly rebuke the minister and top management if they dont perform, set strict deadlines for final implementation of ECA with the likely possibility of unemployment if these dates are not met, draft legislation to remove the management / ownership of the Post Office and Telkom to the Dept of Public Enterprises if it considers this would improve the services to the public, etc.

We really really need a cabinet reshuffle.

I'll say it again, MyAdsl and TAG so far is ineffectual.

Here is why I say it.

Behind the scenes, those with financial interests (or greed) have a grip on the lucrative telecoms industry. Currently a captive market. And they are not going to let go. Why should they?

I predict here and now, in two years, we're still in this boat--lagging miles and miles behind what is available.

Right. Where is the continued and regular protest action needed to make aware in government that it is not only business and the economy that is suffering, but that people like you and me are just fed up with being siphoned of our money for what is the worst, most uncompetitive telecommunications market in the world?

This country has been getting shafted for years now. The result: we slipped from 35th to 47th spot in the network readiness survey if I recall correctly.

(sarcasm)Awesome(/sarcasm)!

We all know its government who created this climate a long time ago and continues to do essentially fockall to fix it, if I may say so bluntly!

Seriously, we need to get out there on to the streets and stand before parliament. This is just so much BULL! And nothing is going to change anytime soon if we continue as we have...

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has become the biggest single obstruction to the opening up of the communications sector.

Classic. Who write this opening paragraph? I'll have to buy you a beer some time!

Yeah, its from the DA so it'll get used as toilet paper by the guavamint.

But Dene Smuts definately seems to have a clue, and thats a good thing..

That only has an effect when the electorate has the mental capacity to not vote the same fools into power again and again, and again.....

Good idea for TAG - become a more effectual lobby group in parliament for IT reform/transformation, in particular, educate and inform parliamentarians about IT issues and challenges. Dont limit it to just the DA, but ANC MPs too. That way they can better "grill" the DOC and ICASA reps next time when they present their "progress" and hopefully encourage SA to be in front of the ICT revolution, and dispel the "agteros kom ook in die kraal" syndrome that ICASA and in particular DOC has adopted. By the time ICASA and DOC act, the changes are already out of date internationally.

It's all very well and good, but how many young South Africans actually voted in the last election?
How many of the forum members actually voted? Even if the party that you "support" doesn't get elected, then at least they may have more seats in parliament to actually do something.

So, to those who did vote, well done. To those who didn't, stop wining.

Now that I have that off of my chest... I'll throw in an extra case of beer. Wait, even better, I'll make it a keg
