We need to put in orders for liquid metal batteries asap. (There are orders in but not enough) while we still can, there's going to be huge issues in western eu becomes winter for them, German electricity prices already started skyrocketing this week.

When the French contractor, Framatome, arrived on-site, they found Koeberg had not made one of the most obvious preparations. Framatome was horrified. So, the replacement has been postponed until the next outage.

Unit 2 was therefore switched off on 18 January 2022 and was supposed to reopen in June 2022. Unit 1 was then to go through the same process, starting in October.

Things then went wrong. The critical steam generator replacement was again postponed to 2023. The full reasons have not been officially disclosed.

Unit 2 finally started operating again on 7 August, almost two months later than projected. Another outage of comparable duration is still required in 2023.

So it was shut down for upgrades, then later restarted with no upgrades made...

The prerequisites for the upgrades to take place were not completed or anywhere close, yet, knowing this, the plant was shut down for the upgrades? But the.... eish.. nee fok.

At least Koeberg has some international oversight by people who understand how to run a nuclear reactor. That is sadly not the case for our other baseload generators. It's another reason why I think nuclear is our best way forward if we are to have electricity after mid-century.
