i don't have cable at home, but last week i happened to be in a hotel in Berlin, (outside of African States, Germany takes the lead in tourists to South Africa) and the "Headlines:" in the ticker tape at the bottom of the screen on BBC World News, were:
THE INCOME OF WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN HOUSEHOLDS IS SIX TIMES THAT OF BLACK HOUSEHOLDS 18 YEARS AFTER APARTHEID, CENSUS FIGURES SHOW....
Unfortunately, "Super Storm" Sandy was taking presidence in the news, otherwise it would have been the top "news bulletin" of the day. Later in the evening there was a short documentary on the strike at Marikana. The headline ran for a couple of hours before and after that, but "Sandy" had begun her devastation of the US coastline. As it was for 9/11, the conspiracy theories have already started to flow, with weather modification, being the culprit now. The closest i could get to finding the census ticker tape information when i got back home to South Africa again, was:

What i'd love to see is that SAPA make-up an income chart like this with a split between Public Sector and Private Sector and expressed demographically as it has been done for the Country as a whole. Perhaps then people might be able to make some sense out of nonsense, only devised to perpetuate BEE and race discrimination. The R203 million that Zuma wants for home extensions and the spend on the like to date, should be included in the incomes.

According to Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti 90% of the land re-distributed to emerging farmers (approx 930 farms) is lying fallow and unproductive.

Thing is; if it were not for the 53% / 47% citizen credit standing factor, how big could this plan have been? Not that i'd believe any Yank "plan" would be just another handout any more, but where could SAfricans be if it were not for 930 farms lying fallow and unproductive, while the hard liners continue to scream and incite blue murder for more land? Despite this, South Africa still ranks in the top 20 countries for agricultural output. Even while farmers have been reduced from 80000 to 30000 since the1980's. Amongst all of the "statistics' i've seen that are supposed to be so cool, this one sticks out the most for me. Our farmers, (amongst all the fears they have to go to bed with at night) are right there in the top 20. This is a hit, if ever there was one and certainly outranks a lot of 1sts i've seen that only go to show that SA is best at keeping money and advancement out of the peoples reach and lining the pockets of the elite. The bad news is; that while being in the Top 20, even when our population only stands at number 26 and our work force at number 33, the price of mielie-meal went up by 84% between 2008 and 2011 and yet another 25% in 2012. That is probably the most malicious ghastly thing that has been done to the people, aside from the vicious, barbaric and cowardly farm murders, the murder of miners and the demolishing of peoples homes. Along with the price of energy, fuel and property tax, it's just plain monstrous, if not Satanic!
So there goes the increase in expenditure and any increase in salary to date, all written off in one fowl swoop.
With the world's 26th largest country by population, but only the the 33rd largest labour force and with all our mineral wealth, we can only manage 41st in the Economist’s "Biggest Exporters" Index. Even with a grossly undervalued Randela (in order to stimulate competitiveness and sky rocket inflation - the proof being " the South African Rand was the second best performing currency against the US Dollar between 2007 and 2011, according to Bloomberg’s Currency Scorecard) we are only ranked 50th in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2011/12, yet The rest of the world must be in pretty dire straits and hell bent by Satan, you might think from all the conspiracy theories out there.

An interesting set of stats, Mr Boxy. Unsure of how they refer to the ambiguous graph presented to us by Stats SA. Why did you include the piece about GM Foods in your reply? Often countries have to import foods to supplement what they cannot produce themselves, however ludicrous this may sound. If an organisation is committed to supplying say 3 million tons of maize to a customer and have no doubt got bank guarantees to ensure payment, they will have to import food if their own stocks are insufficient. It sounds more like bad planning

I imagine that this is primarily servicing the home loan, rather than fixing the roof or panting the walls. I would have thought it would be higher, given that houses are so expensive and a big chunk of many people's income goes to servicing their bond. School fees are presumably hidden away in Miscellaneous

From the graph presented to us by SAPA i think it is, based on info from Stats SA, other than breaking up incomes demographically, the expenditure items have been lumped together as a whole and so this gives a pretty much askewed peripheral vision to things, whereby media grab hold of certain things to forward some, or other agenda.
Now i'm not in the media but i think why i grabbed onto the lowest expenditure item of the four given, (housing for whites is somewhere in the 60% percentile - from the top of my head which doesn't hold facts and figures that well anymore) was because the unemployment figure of the Country as a whole is somewhere around 30%. However (also from the top of my head) i think the figure for black males is in the 60% percentile. The staple diet in this Country is miellie-meal, or maize and so for the majority of this Country who are really poor, the figure for food expenditure must be astronomical.
My mom retired for the second time, at age 75 and she lives in Carletonville. Now the mines there lease out their surface land to farmers. On my last visit, the maize this year was standing knee high to a donkey after harvest season. Used to be a donkey and a half heigh. Therefore GMO.
