These seem to be a bit low.
In the western cape, the dev brackets are a bit off

Somebody tell me where to find these higher paying jobs.

Moving to GP tends to help. Depends on what end of the spectrum you are and what your skillset is, of course. Companies are definitely in hiring mode again now. I received two job offers in the last week without even interviewing, just working with the guys a tad.

That it explains it why I could not get senior JEE developers for almost 12 months - our offer of up to 50K / p.m. was just way too much. By the sounds of it, CJ takes the average on the advertised jobs - I think a more relevant statistic would be to evaluate how many of those job-offers actually found placement based on the salary advertised.

Just realised that me and my boss need to talk...

My take:

Reasoning behind these low salaries:
These appear to be based on vacancies...anyone who is actually marketable would not consider those salaries... they won't get filled easily. You will find these vacancies remaining on the site for months as the are from small companies who are unable to pay much. A marketable person is anyone with a decent 3yr diploma/degree and who constantly ups his skills in this changing environment.

If u don't switch jobs every 2yrs - most likely u will get only a 6% average salary increase per year and your salary will be below average within 2 yrs of getting it.

Secondly anyone in IT who actually has time to fill out a survey - probably isn't very busy - and isn't one of the many movers and shakers in the industry.

Senior developers - go for anything from R350/hr to R700 - based on specialist technology experience.

Many maybe even most IT Managers earn below senior developers due to their specialist experience.

My observations are based on banking, insurance, telecoms, government industries in the last 12 yrs.

Over the years I've been in presentations where banks admitted they actually colluded to reduce IT salaries (2006) as employees were just swapping between them and bumping salaries every few months.

On the other hand - there are many overcharging employees/contractors who are not worth their productivity/skill/company-contribution who ruin the industry - they're there because someone knows someone. They waste project budgets and instigate the recent trend of reduction of salaries in the last few years.

I think these salaries grossly misrepresent my knowledge of the industry. I've seen vacancy ads requesting tons of cv's - just to fill recruiter databases - so they can perform matches when opportunities actually arise.

To the last post: none of the maybe 30 JEE developers I know would look twice at a cost-to-company of R50k-its way too low. If they're good and have experience and really in trouble - then they have their own network of colleagues and past managers who will snap them up in within 3 months. Of the 9 jobs I've opportunities I've accepted over 13years - 1 of them was via pnet/career junction - the remainder was via word-of-mouth in the industry.

Is this based on your monthly salary or your total annual CTC?

My figures are CTC/hr, I'm guessing the survey is CTC as well - it does't make sense to work off individuals net salaries - they vary based on tax structures, dependants etc.. Companies don't post vacancies offering a net after( tax) - a person might have 7 wives/dependants (I'm exaggerating based on leaders in our society)

Even permanent salaries @R50k CTC per month is low - but hey - let see what others have to say.

I realise many people wont see salaries I observe - if one isn't marketable or remain in a single job too long - no company is going to offer a 10% increase every year to keep up to market related.

Seniors would drove overseas if salaries were as the survey suggests.

I'm not a Java guy but I can attest to word-of-mouth earning you positions. As I said earlier in the thread, I've received two job offers during the last week and that was purely from people I've briefly worked with in one capacity or another. The quality of potentials PNET and the like produces as of late is horrendous. The recruitment agents couldn't care less about what your actual skillset is and try and smear you off to anyone that will take you in an attempt to get their commission. Obviously, this works if you have little to no experience, but it doesn't really work once you've reached a more specialized level.

It is a shame that companies in SA don't advertise their available positions directly. The recruitment agents muddy the waters and everyone is worse off for it.

Looks weak.. I still say.. wanna get somewhere in IT, own IT ;-)
