SA-made Android smartphones, tablet prices, specs, launch plans

They're not too far off on specs and pricing is decent.
Though I'd still rather go for the MotoG with a quad core processor.
Only downside to that is, that you don't get an expandable memory card slot.

Have they (the local manufacturer) mentioned what and how they plan to handle the software?
Will it be a vanilla android experience?
What about future updates?

good on you for starting (what sounds like it could be a mo3rse operation) in ZA... advanced electronics manufacturing like these can certainly not be a backyard operation :)
but, "See-ma-hale"? no better choice of name?
Good luck though.... taking on the big guys like Samsung and Huawei can be a daunting task.
And remember, for most SAffers, its all about pricing. Buying local is very nice n all... but if the pricing and quality isnt comparable to the internationals, loyalty goes for a loop

if they do it well, they could give the low level cheapies a good run

No thanks. Lenovo quad core is going for R3500. Doesn't make sense to buy from a no name company and pay that much. Price your items better and you'll have more interested consumers.

Good luck chaps! It would be fantastic if they can be competitive.
They should market that dual sim-thing. Might cheese off VC a bit, but it makes so much sense to have a data sim from Afrihost.

The specs are decent, If performance and quality is also good then they got a winner in their hands.

Cool, might just replace my TOMTOM with this, Perma Waze as a GPS ftw :)

assuming it has GPS?

They however need a big order volume. It really would be great if a well established SA brand (I am thinking the MNOs, banks and retailers) put in an ordering system and so on

These phones don't stand a chance against this phone, feature wise and price wise.

Paying customs and delivery charges will still work you out cheaper and you have a phone with almost double the specs.
1.3 Ghz Quad Core
13 MP Camera
720p 5" Screen
16 GB ROM
1 GB RAM
GPU 533 MHZ
MicroSD Slot
Dual SIM
GPS
3G: WCDMA 850/2100MHz (Cell C should give problems as they work on 900mhz)

Chinese companies are moving so fast that by the time local companies not just in SA, launch their products, it's already old technology and overpriced. Lots of phone and tablet companies in the US go bust or those on kickstarter can't get the funding needed and launch products to late. The Ouya console was a winner though.

But it's great to see some new SA companies trying to do something new. Maybe in the future they will release more updated phones.

/chinese phones

Just had a browse through the xda link a bit earlier and there still seems to be some teething problems with it.
Which ROMS are compatible with that phone though?
Or is there a generic that could go around for it?
Are there enough dev's out there giving one at least some kind of piece of mind that your phone is not going to fall in on itself and you're forced to ship it back to China?

Made in the People's Republic of South Africa

So let me understand this right: they're going to import pc boards and surface mount components from the east, and assemble these devices in a state of the art factory ... in Brakpan perhaps? This for a company that has advertises no existing manufacturing capability for a very diverse range of products.

FutureMobile imported a designed-in-South-Africa Android tablet that they sold at Ackermans. It was good value, but they never attempted to update the software after the initial blitz, so it's stuck on Android 2.1 or something, and never shall it be improved, until the battery dies. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Best option for that would be a Lumia 520 - you can get them for around R1600, the onboard nagivation is great - downloads the entire country on to it, so you don't need to use data - and if you want Waze, they make a WP8 version too.
