World class?? Who writes this carp? just a reminder; the digital devide is widening.
 
Yeah we have a world class market if it was 1997. I think on average in 'world class' markets broadband penetration is over 50%. I think less than 10% have access in SA.
 
bleh another talk of how good things can look.. but when is the president ever gonna wake up and smell the dounuts being handout for things to stay the same year after year.
 
Unbelievable - the claims just become more outlandish (considering the reality of the situation.) What is this - mbeki's yearly day of running the country? He undertakes to undertake nothing - but we must be an information society.

Yeah right. We would, if it was legal for us and without costing us a R 100m for a telecoms license. Typical goverment statement. It reminds me of a certain minister that stated that the private sector is not doing anything and that the state must provide comms. Once again we would, but your laws does not allow us and then without allowing us to do something about it, just empower Sentech (100% goverment owned) to do it and they can't even help themselves, how are they going to empower others.

How many times are we going to see this.

Our leaders stand up and set all the right goals. And then government implimentation actually ends up achieving the exact opposite.

In telecoms we only have to look at the recent announcement that government intends to use state owned Sentech to expand affordable internet connectivity. So what is the first thing Sentech does? Cancel MyWireless Classic and make internet access even more expensive and difficult to access.

Unfortunately the numerous other examples that spring to mind are not telecoms issues, but there is more than ample evidence.

Somehow the message does not get from the head to the hands - and if it does, it certainly does not show in the results.
 
Mbeki is delusional.

I love the way we sit with growing unemployment in this country and a host of other unique challenges, the government punting SMME's and entrepreneurship from the tallest buildings to create employment, yet they fail to provide these business's and people with the vital basic tools to do so, none more important than readily available and affordable communications. Its ridiculous, mind boggling.

Alexander 'the missing bolt' Erwin went to great lengths recently to explain that local business must be competitive and that there will be no special treatment in the tender process for them against overseas multinationals leading up to 2010. This is great, but without the basic infrastructure in place we are all on a hiding to nothing are we not? Cart before the horse if you like.
 
Its hard to be a ICT gateway of africa when the rest of africa has telecoms for cheaper in some instances and there are other 3rd world countries getting all the contracts due to their telecoms providers playing nicely.

ya ya, wasn't it also Mbeki that said telecoms pricing was too high in 2004 and had to come down - result since the speech........absolutely nothing - prices are still 800-1000% more expensive than they should be.
