Who attended the "BDO seminar"? - must be a bunch of fools if they didn't boot this w@nker out after the first sentence.

SA must poach global talent

Johannesburg - Scenario planner and economist Clem Sunter said during a BDO seminar on Tuesday evening that South Africa must now do the reverse of what Australia has been doing "to us" and pick off talent from elsewhere now that the world is in a hard times scenario, but South Africa offers opportunities. [yes, a bullet in the head]
"Up to now we had Australian talent scouts picking off talent - we can reverse that as there will be surplus engineers we can attract now as they're in a hard times scenario," he explained. [attract others while we haven't addressed the reason why our skills left in the first place?]
He notes that while the world average economic growth rate since 1980 has been 3.5% and "we have never had it so good", the world is in a much tougher state than has been for around 30 years.

He feels the US recession is starting to spread like a virus.

Yet South Africa will probably have a softer landing than many other countries due to resources, tourism and infrastructure benefits.

He also floats the possibility of Zimbabwe turning around and boosting opportunities for business in South Africa.

And won't these skills we lure be the wrong colour and for this reason cannot get employment or advance their careers.

ROFLMAO. Frankie, I nearly wet myself just now.

What infrastructure? Our world class public transport? Our electricity supply? Our telecoms? (Okay, I will admit vodacom and mtn offer world class mobile broadband)

And then this "He also floats the possibility of Zimbabwe turning around and boosting opportunities for business in South Africa."

ROFLMAO! :D :D :D :D

Clem Sunter is an idiot. Always has been, always will be.

resources - sure the same gold which is high because of the Iraq war
which triggered the whole economic recession, however the gold
price can easily come down, especially as the Iraqi situation clarifies
itself, the US invests more in drilling and biofuels and alternative energy
sources are introduced.

tourism - because the world which is so badly off can still afford to send
tourists to SA or does he mean domestic tourists?

infrastructure - while our infrastructure is the best in Africa - which concidentally intelligence analisys thinktanks blame for the crime we have in SA, we expect that the road, rail, sea and air links in industrialised nations and China are WORSE I guess.

Well yes, we have gold (which is at an all time high right now, hence the Rand is surviving somehow), we have roads which haven't been repaired in 15 years and we have tourism! Expect to overtake China in 2 years and America's economy in 5!
