  • Councillor Lungiswa Ntshuntshe from the EFF has joined the DA in the Cape Town council.
  • Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed Ntshuntshe on Tuesday, calling the EFF a "failing organisation".
  • This is the second cross-party switch to the DA recently, following Banele Majingo's move from the ANC last month.

In another surprising political twist, a councillor from the EFF has crossed the floor to join the DA in the Cape Town council.

Councillor Lungiswa Ntshuntshe ditched the party on Tuesday to join the DA ranks.

Ntshuntshe is the second opposition party member to join the DA in Cape Town, following the resignation of ANC caucus leader Banele Majingo, who joined the DA last month.

In an announcement made by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, he said: "It's such a pleasure to welcome councillor Lungiswa Ntshuntshe from the EFF, who is today resigning from that failing organisation and joining the DA."

Ntshuntshe said the reason she left the EFF was because the DA has "resources" and "they do want to do more".

"I've seen them do this, so that's why I am here," she said.

Ntshuntshe was among the EFF members that disrupted Hill-Lewis' council address in August last year.

At the time, EFF party members were referring to the taxi strike and forced Hill-Lewis off the podium, where he had just begun making his mayoral address during a council meeting.

The EFF said they will issue a statement on Ntshuntshe's resignation in due course.

News24 previously reported that Majingo was leading the charge for a motion of no-confidence to be tabled against council speaker Felicity Purchase.

On the day of the council meeting, opposition parties were seething upon hearing about Majingo's exit. Because he was not present to sponsor the motion when it was due to be tabled, it lapsed.

Hill-Lewis added: "I think it's a growing trend in South Africa that people are seeing the DA as the only party that can truly build the future of our country in a productive and constructive way

As expected, the DA delivers a slam dunk victory on the budget. We're now back to the beginning, and the Finance Minister will have to start from scratch. This could have all been avoided if the other arrogant, politically naive and immature parties just listened. They've now delivered the easiest political victory to the DA. They've kept digging their graves deeper over the past few weeks. They would be well advised to keep their mouths shut while the rest of the process unfolds.

Thabo Mbeki stands out as the best in terms of economic growth and fiscal management. Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa have been terrible.

There’s no question that former president Thabo Mbeki was South Africa’s best-performing leader based on measures such as economic growth and sound fiscal management.

He surpasses Nelson Mandela who came before him, and those who succeeded him. Using other measures such as social progress in delivering houses, schools and healthcare to the poor, Mandela stands head-and-shoulders above the rest.

Things got even worse under Ramaphosa, with unemployment hitting 31.9% in 2024 and youth unemployment at nearly 60%.
But our ANC supporters here don't mind unemployment...and VAT increases etc. Ramaphosa is as useless as you can get to do anything productive. I wonder how he got his law degree .. because he has done zilch the whole time

Only the one by-election today in KZN. As usual because it is KZN, the provincial 2024 results are the main ones used, while the 2021 municipal results are in brackets. As TheChamp was ecstatic with MK's victory over the DA in an eThekwini ward two weeks ago, we will see how happy he is if, as forecast, this ANC ward becomes an MK ward in the by-election.
