It's very disingenuous to make it about Mashatile though, and it lends itself to the narrative of a media campaign against him.

If there is a problem on travel costs for the executive, that should be a problem regardless of who is taking the trips, the media tends to cherry pick on who they do these stories on and make it about that person, like they did with Gayton. If they are really playing the ball by being worried about the travel costs, why isn't there a story about how much that white house delegation costs?

It is a problem regardless of who is taking the trips, and if John spent R2m on accommodation for him and his missus (what the actual fsck on that front as well, Paul should pay her portion) for at most 9 days in London, I'd be just as pissed.

Exactly, there isn't an effort from the media or the greater public to hold the executive accountable for the costs, all the effort is on picking a certain cabinet member based in a particular narrative being pushed at the time, hoping for a good outrage.

Maybe he was investigate and there was no story ?
Merely being on a trip does not mean there is a story
Its only when you are using the trip for other purposes. Like getting the public to pay for your wife to go shopping etc

How exactly is it determined that there is a story or no story?

Because the story seems to be that Mashatile's trip cost R2.3 million and his accommodation costs R900k, unless there is more behind the News24 paywall, it doesn't seem something illegal is being alleged on his part, and the whole story is simply that the state spent lots of money on the trip?

It's a problem irrespective of which party. Too much is spent on executive luxury. They are supposed to be servants of the public. And then they want to raise taxes to make up for it...

Yeah, the media obviously have an agenda they are pushing but besides the political point scoring it doesn't seem like there is any political party that is committed to having transparency and accountability on the spending, one would think the MPs would push for Scopa to scrutinize every trip taken and let us know if there is any case of wasteful or irregular expenditure.

The selective reporting and outrage is not helping in any aspect.

Every person I know who's emigrated has never been back, many don't even come back for a visit. Kinda sad seeing friends and family leave and never come back. I've not even met my nephews.

Our media has long ago lost any sense of holding politicians to account. Their job is not to ask questions, it's to report, and phrase it in a way to attract the most clicks. That's why sometimes it appears that they're on the ANC's side, and sometimes on the DA's.

Nonsense like this should be the first things on the chopping block before even thinking about tax hikes...

They could put some of the politicians on chopping blocks, a good 50 to 75kg could be chopped off and they'd still function.

No political party questions jackshit that they either benefit off now or possibly in the future. You think either of those geriatric filled Yanksville parties is going to pass age limits for public office?
