Where in the Wikipedia entry does it say he was part of the ANC as a politician? I guess he could be considered an ANC cadre currently but when he was actually involved in politics (until 1997), he was never a member of the ANC.

That is completely incorrect and I'm not even sure why people share it.
There is archeological evidence of the bantu/nguni tribes living in the EC area since at least the third century that's 200AD. Later forming the Xhosa nation, also the San and the Nguni nations were blended at a few points hence the similar clicks in certain languages.
The Zulu as a tribe only took the name Zulu from their first chief, back in the 1500s formed from an offshoot of another Nguni tribe already in the Kwa Zulu Natal area. Shaka then united even more clans into the Zulu nation in the 1800s. He is also responsible for the Zimbabwean population as a large majority of nguni who didn't want to merge were killed or forced to move.
Tsonga was around since the 1400s migrating from Moz.

Throughout history every peoples are migrants, we've all moved from one location to another, the San and Khoi were here 20 000 years ago, the Nguni people started filtering in 5000 years ago, diverging into the many different tribes we have in SA now.
The Dutch only came 400 years ago, when do you stop being a migrant?
