SA Post Office suspends parcel services to the US

The South African Post Office (SAPO) has suspended all outbound parcel services containing goods to the United States of America, with immediate effect and until further notice.

“This decision follows new regulations introduced by the Trump administration on 30 July 2025, which remove the duty-free allowance for incoming international parcels,” the Post Office said.

Mybad.
They didn't specify what would happen when the package reached our shores, so I took a chance.
But don't worry, as expected I never received it, so the universe is still in balance.

@mylesillidge Maybe do some googling before publishing. Making it sound like SAPO's doing something unique or that it has anything to do with Shein or Temu is piss-poor writing.

SAPO isn't the only postal service to stop sending parcels to the US. The rest of Europe has already done so.

I get that this is just SAPO jumping on the bandwagon, but why do the postal services care about the tarrifs?

Doesn't someone like SAPO just get the parcel as far as US Customs, and then it is USPO and the recipients problem? SAPO doesn't collect the charge from either the sender or receiver, they just need to get the package to the US.

Is there some sort of thing that if the receiver doesn't want it, then SAPO have to take it back?

Much like SAPO, I don't know anything about how a functional mail systems works, so I would be very interested in why this is a problem.
