According to the AAPA figures, Durban is the busiest port in Africa by TEU's handled.

Be VERY interesting to see how Toyota handle having a port right next door to their factory when the DigOut is complete... I expect the volumes to go up even further.

Those big car carriers are plentiful in durbs. I watched one ship offload and then onload onto trains & trucks once and it's pretty amazing ho many cars they drive out of that things belly.

Those Ro-Ro boats are super incredible.. watched my fair share as well.. even tried to get a gig driving the cars off into bonded storage, but the pay was a bit kark...

Ja but there is enough to support Port Said as a busier container port and the AAPA figures split Said into two ports East and West

Ah 40ft container = 2TEU's, mostly Break Bulks and Reefers. I can provide the status on the number of TEU's vs Durban and PE but it's late, but so far as I know, PE mostly deals with 20ft containers. Reefers are a massive import for Durban as it's central to the rest of the country. Tired now, work stuff later :(

Can't say I ever remember Durban being "two" ports... yes we are in the process of building the second one now though.
 
EL also does the 20ft almost exclusively, don't they?

The Coega plan though would see the deeper berth and bigger containers so PE really could become a small container harbour as I understand it

Whereas the last I saw Cape Town had strangely a bigger mix but that was a few years ago and not sure how it changes. Figures would be interested Beerisgood

I think, given Cape Towns limited land availability for expansion, that its going to become one of the smaller ports in SA in the not too distant future.

Your really bitchy comment aside, I never claimed to be a marine port expert. I always update my opinion based on the balance. I had an opinion, it was updated on the balance of evidence. This is normal for people.

thats why I was surprised for CT to take any larger containers. It seems to be destined to being a fishing and tourism port the idea of large containers seemed odd - I may have misread the figures and it may have been an anomolous year.

Busy checking on the two ports of Durban issue but I seem to recall something about the bluff side or whatever being given separate stats. Not sure what distinguishes a port such that it is deemed two ports vs just having multiples quays berths and piers or whatever.

Ahhh ok, yes.. what you might be seeing there is the old legacy where one side of the harbour was breakbulk/liquid bulk/dry bulk and the other was containerised.

You don't need to be a marine port expert or even have an amateur knowledge of the subject to look up that Richards Bay is not some small little port - its the busiest by tonnage port in Africa for goodness sake.

What are your top 3? Cause afaik, Durban, Cape Town, PE and EL are the largest ones.
EL is used to export Mercs and much of our meat.
Richards Bay and Saldanha Bay are smaller than PE and EL AFAIK.

when the facts are readily verifiable is simply stupid especially when you miss the mark horribly. The "top 3" here is not something a person thumb sucks on you can check the figures, define parameters and so on.

That sounds about right - the containerised section being counted separately to the legacy section, which would mean that the count for the Port of Durban as a container port doesn't change if there is an exclusion - and probably means that there is no longer any split on any international list. I don't know how Port Said though is two ports though and can't find anything definitive on the subject either :(
