SA software engineers unite

try tell that to some shiny shoe "project manager" pushing emails with a R23k laptop while sipping latte's.

point is - until everyone else actually understands what software engineers do - there will be no peace.

I was about to troll a bit on the whole "engineer" part of the title, but then noticed that it is at least organised by the IEEE.

Hmm, looks like someone forgot to invite Zuma's Indians...

Someone forgot to invite the Kapsch/SANRAL employees too

After going through the website for this gathering I have concluded that I would rather stick a fork in my eye than attend this "Colloquium". Sounds like torture to me and I'm a senior software developer.

it is being co-presented by the BITF (Black IT Forum), with the objective of continuing to develop professionalism in the industry

Erm... BITF and professionalism used in the same sentence, and on a topic of software engineering; but it's not 1 April?

Wonder what they'll think if someone started a White IT Forum or a Coloured IT Forum.

The only thing better than this little gathering is sleeping pills. I mean I don't even read my specs - listening to them talk about IT for the less fortunate or how to grow IT shops will be, quite honestly, the most boring thing ever.

It's pure mental masturbation for computer science academics. It doesn't seem to reflect anything that's going in the real world of IT.

I'm helping organize the event. Yes, a lot of the discussions are around policy and strategy as an industry - so yes, maybe a little over-intellectual.

This is not a "hacker" type event, it is aimed at people that are interested in slightly more elevated issues than what IDE is best or php vs rails troll-athons.

There are workshops that are hands-on tech, the main sessions are around things like accreditation (does it make sense?), how to structure funding/VC, competitiveness as an industry.
