Sam Ramsamy (Gallo)

London - Former anti-apartheid campaigner and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Sam Ramsamy has called for more action from South African sports administrators to fully integrate sport in the republic.

Ramsamy, a member of the IOC's executive board, told Reuters in a telephone interview that the dream of a World Cup and Olympic Games in his native country had helped to sustain him during his years of exile while South Africa was ruled by a white minority government.

South Africa, which has already successfully staged the rugby and cricket World Cups, will host the first Soccer World Cup awarded to an African nation this year.

"My dream wasn't only to see the soccer World Cup in South Africa. We also had the dream of staging the Olympic Games in South Africa," Ramsamy said.

Ramsamy said although South African blacks had striven to reconcile with the minority white population: "I don't know whether all whites have understood and accepted this magnanimity of forgiveness and acceptance.

"We are trying to normalise the situation but I'm not sure all South African whites understand that. That is a concern of mine. Moves are being made to ensure equal opportunities for all but it's coming very, very slowly.

"The white South African population is less than 20% of the whole South African population and we are doing very well. But can you imagine how well we would do if we provided the same opportunities for the other 80% of the population?

"We would have a tremendous super team which very few countries in the world could beat."

First off, the white population is +-9.5% of the country not 20% (although he did say less).

You can try and normalize, but I think they shouldn't fiddle with the national teams - there only the best should be chosen, and we can see people from different races coming through the ranks now.

Yep, funny how many are still preoccupied about what they cannot get or achieve neither own! Much like a whiner that complain about the modern cars whilst he is only driving a vintage!

Well judging by our soccer team it may not be a bad thing :D. A very simple way to fix it is development so it is only so white because the government do not develop the poor. All they care about is nice expensive cars. So get sport into the poor area's and develop poor black kids from a young age and it will change.

OMW now i will be called a racist :p

Exactly. "Equal opportunities for all" needs to start with decent education for all. There are plenty of opportunities in this country for people who are well educated. Pity people get into politics to enrich themselves, not improve the plight of the people who elect them.

Excellent point made RSD.

Politicians are there to serve the people and not enrich themselves unfortunately this is not always the case.

I agree that the development is currently inaequate, but it is definitely getting better. I think the influx of talented players of colour who have had the opportunity at decent coaching will peak soon. Forcing the issue by putting sub par players in a team is definitely not the right way though. Let it occur naturally, there is definitely no racial hinderance, its now a matter of development and time.

Dude have you seen how some black people live? Please the idiots in anc are to busy grabbing as much as they can to worry about the poor. We should have a huge amount of talented black players but the government is far to corrupt to help them ever develop. Look at our soccer team as prime example. Our best soccer player is pienaar. Do you have any idea how many blacks there are in this country? If the government stopped stealing and developed them we could be a power house like ghana or ivory coats.

Bunch of kants who run this country.

Morgoth what support do the blacks get in this country? please tell me because i have no idea. If whites chose soccer over cricket or rugby a bit more you can be sure bafana would not consist of mostly blacks.

yeah I am in the townships about once a week and the living conditions are horrendous. They however do get free schooling, medical, water, electricity etc but I agree that the fat bastards at the top like Malema with R4m houses are living in luxury while their "brothers/sisters" are dying of starvation.

If I think of myself if I was very good at a sport I would have definately had the oportunity to make it into a national side, don't think its quite the same for a black kid in Mfuleni.. This is where the ANC is failing badly, instead of starting at the bottom with better education and facilities they just force sub-par indiviuals of colour into jobs and teams and then they fail. Sad.

Have you ever played cricket or rugby against an 'all black' team? look at all they get through sponsors, state of the art equipment, top quality coaches, provincial teams are required to go by the quota system, yes the township is awefull, but if they just have a bit of guts then they should really be able to make it...

but the fact is they still suck and get it way to easy...

in all honesty how to a sporting event next time your old school players in a township like Mamalodi and look at all the equipment and support those black kids get courtesy of the government...
