Been here 6 months, 3 months working and my take home pay is double what I got in SA. I have also probably been demoted in seniority but that means the upside is so much better.

Anything that involves labour is ridiculously priced but general groceries and booze at the supermarket works out to the same price. I have chosen to have cheaper accommodation so currently I am saving a fortune every month. It’s up to each person to make it work but opportunities seem a plenty over here.

Also taken a big demotion, but was worth it to get a foot in the door. Already my boss is making noises about a bigger job. Take-home slightly more than I had in SA, despite the salary being less. Putting a LOT more into my pension fund though

The expectations of output, at least in my experience is way lower and they so much easier to please, don’t think I’ve needed to work over time once. Also don’t think it will be long before I move up but otherwise it’s great. Hopefully that bigger job lands soon for you!!

Got out of hotel quarantine a month ago and have received 2 offers from 5 cvs I sent out. I'm not brilliant not special but there's so much work in this place it's ridiculous.
Worst May weather in years but it is what it is I suppose.
Some things are way more expensive, but groceries generally aren't.
The food is ****en terrible though. Mayonnaise in this country has no flavour whatsoever and I haven't had a decent biryani since leaving SA - "Here's your dry rice and 4 pieces of lamb with a tub of weird brown sauce. That'll be 10 pounds." And don't get me started on sushi prices jesus ****. 8 pounds for 2 pieces of salmon nigiri. I miss Banjaara & Golden Rose R200 sushi platters.
Also nice is that I'm far away from London which, when compared to the early 2000s when I lived there, has really gone backwards. Each to his own I suppose

When I left UK in 2000 a pack of fags was 4 pounds 20 and exchange rate was around 10 to 1 so that was 42 bux in RSA
20 years later smokes are now that price

A pint of beer here in the pub is about R35 which equates to 1 pound 80. Yeah right, a pint of beer in pommy land is more like 4 quid which is almost 80 bux Sod that, I will stay here in South Africa thank you very much

Yeah I suppose having cheap beer is a small price to pay for having your wife or daughter raped, and your family murdered for a few pieces of jewellery. Then you factor in BEE and how fair that makes the job market . But hey, at least I can drown my sorrows for cheap.

South African IT professionals looking to advance their careers and earn a better salary could consider moving to the UK.

The UK tax calculation is incorrect

You get a pre tax allowance on the bands not 40% of net. Its 40% on the amount over the band

You also have mandatory tax free pension which is matched by your employer which basically adds 5% to your gross after tax

TL;DR you can actually pay less/same tax here, also you actually get stuff in return for it. So deduct R50k/yr from the SA salaries to account for all the insurance premiums and sky high interest rates
