Apologies, I should have said "move out of my house but still make monthly payments on it so that my freeloading family can stay there for free."

Nonsense! That woman has a case of her family living off her. That is not ubuntu buddy.

Its all about mutual respect and acknowlagement that our lives are inter dependendent. Thats ubuntu.

The point is sox that "ubuntu" does not exist in this country. All types of scams and bulls**t, like the one above for example, have been made in the name of "ubuntu".

Fraternity is something that exists and is alive and well in Europe NOT Africa.

Hmmmm I tend not to agree with your statement too much, it may be alive but it sure ain't well... Certainly more than in SA methinks though.

Look at social services in France and the Scandanavian countries. More respect for property, life and freedom in mainland Europe. No, it is definitely healthy in many European countries.
 
Ubuntu is just the street name for a new cocaine variant... SAA tried sharing ubuntu but they didn't follow through with the plan when their staff were being arrested for sharing too much :D

Hmm, I believe the ills of the economy can be traced back to just those services. There was an article not too long ago about an Irish bloke who earned mored on welfare than he could by working.

The respect bit - for sure. But most of them have only had it since the late 1940s....
 
Pardon my ignorance, but I'm still not quite clear about what Ubuntu is. From what I can see, it seems to say that my existance is meaningful through the interaction with others. Am I correct?

Secondly, what rules / guides does this impart on society. For instance, Christianity might say: "Love your neighbour as yourself". Ignoring the fact that I think Christianity's rules are highly ambiguous and very open to interpretation and therefore somewhat meaningless, can anyone provide something similar for Ubuntu?

Thirdly, I think it's unfair to judge the effectiveness of a philosophy by how it's implemented. May Christians, have for example, committed atrocious deeds, but that doesn't mean you write off the philosophy.

Your definition seems to tie in with the servant/leader philosophy. And that was something that the Jesuits were quite keen on. I can't think that there is anything 'new' in ubuntu so who would want it. Maybe the minister should concentrate on bedding it down here before packing it in tins.

Interesting, please elaborate on the servant / leader / Jesuit idea.

I also wonder what Ubuntu presents, that it unique and makes it better than other philosophies?

It never gets runtime errors? :D They should concentrate on SA and it's problems. Unless of course thats what they're hoping for. Exporting the criminal mindset, potentially because they've robbed the country blind and now need a new cash cow? ;)

I think Ubuntu only works if you live in a rondavel in the KZN countryside. I've seen little evidence of it - ok maybe the TRC hearings were a symptom - but the governments seems to have a lot of internal enemies. We don't see it in parliament.

I am sure that I would do it justice and you could find quite a bit on it with a bit of the old Google and there have been a few books on the topic.

The idea is that a leader's role is to serve others, to help them achieve. The leader unlocks the potential in others.

Unfortunately ubuntu is a myth in this country. Brotherhood or fraternity has been sacrificed in the name of power and money making. Everyone is out for themselves, don't kid yourself! And the ANC is the worst repeat offender.

Rape, murder, theft, hijacking. This country has bugger all concern for fellow man. Maybe we should start focussing on sorting out this "ubuntu" at home before we attempt to export it!

Good gracious, this woman is going to turn us into a laughing stock amongst the international community.
