Well done SEC. There can't be any doubt that they deserved to be on the podium again this year. Just goes to show you what teamwork... and the support of the Orange Army... can achieve.

Still not a fan of the band though

Klaasen credits ‘hard work’ behind the scenes for Betway SA20 Season 2 success
Baartman and Jansen reflect on championship-winning performances

Sunday, 11 February 2024: Heinrich Klaasen's last 12 months have been out of this world.

The Durban’s Super Giants super star was named Betway SA20 Player of the Season and Batter of the Season for 2024 on Saturday evening at Newlands.

It bookmarked an extraordinary period for Klaasen that began right here in the inaugural Betway SA20 Season 1.

Klaasen lit up Centurion with a sparkling ton in Season 1, before heading off to the Indian Premier League where he repeated the act for Sunrisers Hyderabad. There was three peat when Klaasen struck another century in The Hundred to showcase his ability across all conditions.

But he was not done yet. Klaasen built up to the ICC 50-overs World Cup in India last year with an astonishing 174 off 83 balls against Australia in India before exploding in Mumbai with another rollicking 67-ball 109 against England.

Klaasen’s purple patch continued in Betway SA20 Season 2 where he bludgeoned the opposition’s bowlers to all parts of the six venues around the country, as he finished with 447 runs at a strike-rate of 207.90.

The consistency of Klaasen’s striking, which yielded a record-breaking 37 sixes, has been incredible and he attributes his success to the hard work behind the scenes.

“The swing has been good the last couple of years. I think better decision-making and execution has helped me. It helps when you execute the right plan you have in mind. It took a lot of hard work to get to where I am at this moment but I am also in a good space mentally,” Klassen said.

Although Klaasen was unable to power DSG to their maiden Betway SA20 championship, the 32-year-old was pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“It’s nice to perform, but it’s only worth it when your team gets over the line, otherwise the performance means nothing to me. It is a little bit disappointing, but there's more important things in life than winning trophies. It has been a good tournament, our guys played fantastically, but the better team won on the day,” he said.

“The boys have been fantastic, together with the coaches, and supporting staff, it's a thankless job. We can't ask for a better tournament in South Africa. The SA20 is up there with the world's best.”

Sunrisers duo Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen were also honoured on Saturday evening for their heroic performances in helping the Eastern Cape team defend their title in Season 2.

Baartman was named Bowler of the Season after claiming 18 wickets at an average of 11.78, while Jansen collected the Rising Star of the Season for his 20 wickets and his 105 runs at a strike-rate of 177.96.

“We had a number of injuries in the team, including Sisanda Magala and Craig Overton. I knew I had to step it up. The team played very nicely, the way they set the tone with the new ball throughout the tournament was unbelievable,” Baartman said.

Equally Jansen paid tribute to his teammates - in true Sunrisers’ fashion - for helping him to achieve the personal recognition.

“I couldn't have done it without the team as personal performances can only take you so far. Having those two (Dan Worrall and Baartman) with me is an awesome feeling. Just to know that if I'm not on it on any given occasion, they'll carry me,” the 23-year-old said

“With the bat, I just go out and try and enjoy it. If it comes off, it comes off. It’s an awesome feeling.”

I don't like players who have already played international cricket getting rising star. For me that award should go to an emerging youngster who hasn't played international cricket or very very few games.

Had to admit I couldn't remember the requirements for that one - found them in a press release from last year so it would need to be adjusted - the only requirement seems to be they be under 25 at the start of the competition. Marco is only 23.

Player of the Season

For this award Betway SA20 is making use of the South Africa Cricketers’ Association’s (SACA) unique MVP scoring system to determine the winner. The scoring system takes into account a range of factors, including batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy, player of the match awards and even being on the winning team, in calculating the eventual Player of the Season winner.

Batter of the season

This award will be unlike any other regular batting prize where the leading run-scorer is customarily the winner. Instead, the winner of this award will be determined by filtering the SACA MVP scoring system for batting performances including runs scored, percentage of team’s runs scored, strike rate and milestones achieved.

Bowler of the season

Similar to the batting award, the bowling award will be determined by filtering the SACA MVP scoring system for bowling performances including wickets taken - top order wickets count more, runs conceded, milestones and economy rate.

2023 Rising Star

Only players under 25-years-old on 10 January 2023 will be in contention for this award. The winner will be the highest ranked player on the SACA MVP scoring system who meets the aforesaid age-criteria (i.e. is younger than 25 years old).

Spirit of Cricket

The Betway SA20 match officials (match referees and umpires) have scored each team on a game-to-game basis taking into account the spirit of the game, respect to opposition, respect to umpires and respect for laws of the game. The highest ranked team(s) will be the winners of this award.

Groundsman of the Season

This award will be won by the groundsman who receives the highest score for the preparation of his ground. Each ground is scored on a game-to-game basis by the Betway SA20 match referee on the quality of the pitch and outfield conditions and its suitability to the T20 format.

They need to add extra requirements like the IPL has. Max 23 years old, max of 5 tests,20 odi's and 25 ipl games at the start of the season.
