Graeme Smith welcomes world-class talent to Betway SA20 ahead of player auction

Betway SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith is thrilled with the exceptional talent that will feature in Season 3 of South Africa’s premier T20 competition, beginning on January 9, 2025. With the franchises confirming their retained and pre-signed players, Smith highlighted his confidence in the strong squads assembled for the upcoming season and ahead of the player auction in Cape Town on the 1st October.

“In the first two seasons, the world class cricket in front of capacity crowds has positioned Betway SA20 as one of the Tier 1 franchise leagues on the global circuit. With international stars like Dinesh Karthik, Ben Stokes, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Trent Boult, Johnny Bairstow, Devon Conway, Zak Crawley, Rashid Khan and Rahmanullah Gurbaz committing to their respective SA20 teams, the hard work that the League and franchises have put in to create a world-class experience has paid off and we thank everyone involved for their monumental efforts,” said Smith.

“To have the calibre of international players joining local heroes like Aiden, KG and Heinrich sets up an explosive season. We are also incredibly proud of all the domestic players who have been retained by the teams, including the majority of the rookies who have been incorporated as fully-contracted players for Season 3.”

Betway SA20 Final Returns to Wanderers; Season 3 Opener and Qualifier 1 at St George's Park

The highly anticipated Betway SA20 Season 3 is set to light up the South African summer once again, bringing world-class cricket and entertainment to fans all around the country.

The action-packed tournament, featuring the best local and international talent, is set to thrill from 9 January 2024, with the Final locked in for 8 February at the iconic Wanderers Stadium.

The season kicks off with an almighty bang as back-to-back champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) start their unprecedented bid for a hat-trick of titles by hosting MI Cape Town (MICT) in the competition opener at St George’s Park. The opener will feature a blockbuster face-off between SEC captain Aiden Markram and MICT’s new box-office recruit Ben Stokes. There will also be a battle of southpaws between SEC's Marco Jansen and MICT's Trent Boult.

After the curtain’s been lifted, last season’s runners-up Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) welcome Pretoria Capitals (PC) to Kingsmead on Friday, 10 January. It will be the first opportunity for the Super Giants fans to see Black Caps legend Kane Williamson in action up close, while Capitals’ speedster Anrich Nortje will also make a welcome return after missing Season 2 through injury.

The action gets ramped up even further on the opening weekend when Paarl Royals (PR) begin their campaign against SEC at the picturesque Boland Park before Joburg Super Kings (JSK) take on MICT under lights at what is expected to be a heaving Bullring on Saturday, 11 January.

The Royals have invested heavily in their young players with teenage fast bowling sensation Kwena Maphaka out to continue his upward career trajectory. He won’t need to look too far to find some calm, experienced heads around him though as he will be able to call on legends Dinesh Karthik and Joe Root for advice, whilst for JSK, it will be an emotional homecoming for Devon Conway as he makes his return to the Wanderers to lead the charge with Faf du Plessis.

The weekend’s action reaches a crescendo when the Pretoria Capitals (PC) face off against DSG at Centurion on Sunday, 12 January.

As the season progresses, the stakes will rise, leading into the playoff stages.

Season 3 has retained the same playoff structure of Season 2, but this time around they will be played at three venues, spreading the business end of the tournament to more fans than Season 1 and 2; with a Qualifier 1, Eliminator and a Qualifier 2 setting up the road to the Final.

The top two teams will play each other in Qualifier 1, followed by the Eliminator between the third and fourth-placed teams. The loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator will battle it out in Qualifier 2, for a chance to book their place in the Final, against the winner of Qualifier 1.

St George’s Park in Gqeberha will host Qualifier 1, while Centurion will stage both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2.

And after hosting the inaugural Betway SA20 showpiece, the grand finale will once again return to the Wanderers in Season 3 on 8 February 2024.

The fixtures were unveiled in Johannesburg and attended by Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, players from the six franchise teams, key stakeholders and the media, as the excitement builds towards 9 January.

“Season 3 is set to be bigger and better, with a fantastic lineup of matches that will captivate our fans,” Smith said.

“We’re thrilled to start the season in Gqeberha with our defending champions and look forward to an action-packed summer of cricket. As we welcome international talent to the roaring pool of local stars, we aim to deliver an unforgettable experience for both players and fans alike.”

As with previous seasons, all matches will be broadcast live across seven territories, including Sub-Saharan Africa, India, the UK, Australasia, the UAE, and globally via ICC TV. Fans can also stay connected through Betway SA20’s social media channels for live updates and comprehensive coverage of all 34 matches.

The momentum continues to build as the franchises prepare to finalise their squads, including filling their Rookie slot, at the upcoming auction on 1 October 2024. With the excitement of the auction and the release of the fixtures, fans are encouraged to mark their calendars and prepare for a summer of incredible cricket.

Welcoming the next generation of Incredible as Schools SA20 launches nationally

SA20 and Cricket South Africa (CSA) are proud to announce the launch of Schools SA20, designed to discover and nurture cricket talent among both girls and boys across South Africa.

This exciting national competition will run from September 2024 to March 2025, with schools from all 16 Provinces competing for the coveted title of Schools SA20 champions. Over 370 boys' school teams and more than 200 girls' school teams will participate with over 1000 matches being played.

SA20 and CSA have shattered the glass ceiling with the launch of the dedicated girls' competition, reflecting a commitment to advancing women's cricket in South Africa. The girls' competition will also be a key part of the Proteas’ U19 Girls team’s preparation for the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup in Malaysia in 2025.

The competition will be conducted in three phases:
  • Phase 1: Provincial Competitions (September-November 2024)
  • Phase 2: Regional Playoffs (January-February 2025)
  • Phase 3: National Finals (March 13-15, 2025)
Schools SA20 is an extension of SA20’s mission to continue to provide opportunities for young cricketers in South Africa, building on the success of the Rookie draft system the League introduced for players in SA20 Season 2.

Graeme Smith, SA20 League Commissioner, stated: "Schools SA20 is more than just a competition; it has the potential to significantly contribute to our cricketing future. There are a number of current Protea Men and Women who made their mark at a schools level; I can’t wait to see the next generation entertaining and showcasing their skills on this global stage and no doubt the next teenage cricket sensation will announce themselves to the world out of this competition.

“SA20 is also committed to working with CSA to invest in building the base of women’s players and developing the women’s game in South Africa,” he continued. “Our sponsorship of the U19 Girls’ Camps, combined with CSA’s and the government’s initiatives to professionalise the women’s game, will play a major role in growing the base of players for future Proteas Women’s success."

Future Proteas Men and Women stars such as Kagiso Rabada, Laura Wolvaardt, Lizaad Williams, Sinalo Jafta, Patrick Kruger, Lara Goodall, Nqaba Peter and Nadine de Klerk to name just a few, all began their cricketing journeys at school level before progressing to higher honours and will no doubt serve as inspiration for the young cricketers set to represent their schools in the Schools SA20 competition.

Cricket South Africa CEO Pholetsi Moseki, who attended the launch event at Wanderers Stadium, expressed his excitement about the introduction of such an important competition for the development of cricket in South Africa:

"Schools SA20 is a platform to positively impact the future of cricket in South Africa. By bringing together the best young talent from all 16 Members across the country and providing them with the opportunity to shine on a national stage, Schools SA20 is set to play a crucial role in the growth of the sport. For many of these young athletes, this competition will serve as a stepping stone towards professional cricket, with the potential to unearth the next generation of SA20 and Proteas Men and Women stars."

Schools SA20 will be showcased on a global platform thanks to a partnership with SuperSport Schools, with over 200 matches set to be live-streamed and broadcast across various media platforms.
