International teams use Betway SA20 as ICC Men’s T20 World Cup preparation

Netherlands and Namibia to play a series of warm-up matches against SA20 teams

Saturday, 6 January 2024: International squads preparing for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean later this year are using Betway SA20 teams as crucial preparation ahead of the global showpiece. The Netherlands and Namibia will fine-tune their strategies against some of the best domestic talent and world’s top cricketers who are also currently preparing for Season 2 of the league starting on 10 January 2024.

The Netherlands will face Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town, while Namibia will prepare against Joburg Super Kings.

The move is an indication of the competitive nature of the League, which produced high-quality cricket and performances in the inaugural season in 2023.

Namibia Head Coach, Pierre de Bruyn, says the quality of the opposition and facilities will give his squad the ideal preparation for the global event taking place in June.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to play against a top franchise like the Joburg Super Kings in these matches. For the Namibian players, it is another opportunity to use it as a measuring tool against a variety of top international players. Secondly, playing at a worldclass stadium is very similar to what you will get playing at a World Cup, we experienced that at the last two World Cups in the UAE and Australia and as a player you can use this platform to simulate that World Cup coming in June, which will be against some quality players.”

Equally, instead of opting for the usual internal inter-squad matches for preparation, the franchise teams are pulling out all the stops in their preparations to give themselves the best chance of success in the eagerly anticipated second season which starts on Wednesday, 10 January.

Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said: "The League is thrilled to be able to provide a preparatory platform for Associate teams eyeing success in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup later this year. Our League's commitment to promoting cricketing talent aligns with the aspirations of these teams. We look forward to seeing the incredible growth and performances of these teams as they gear up for the pinnacle event in the T20 format in June.

“It’s also equally beneficial for the franchise teams to have competitive warm up matches against international opponents as we approach season two starting on 10 January,” Smith added. “The squads this season are packed with exciting local and international stars, the stage is set for an entertaining month of cricket."

The first match of Season 2 kicks off on Wednesday, 10 January when defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Joburg Super Kings. For the full match schedule and to purchase tickets visit www.SA20.co.za

Betway SA20 remains biggest prize in SA cricket
Season 2 winners in line for R34 million pay day

Sunday, 7 January 2024:
Betway SA20 remains the biggest prize in South African cricket with a total prize money of R70 million on offer for Season 2.

The winners of the competition – who will be crowned at Newlands on 10 February - are set to walk away with a handsome R34 million. The runners-up will claim a R16.25 million share of the prize money, with third and fourth place receiving R8.9 million and R7.85 million respectively. Fifth and sixth place will also receive R2.5 million and R2.0 million each.

The inaugural Betway SA20 Season 1 was an unprecedented success with spectators streaming through the turnstiles at all six venues around the country.

Fans were treated to high-quality T20 cricket along with an entertainment experience second to none.

The players were certainly inspired by playing in front of packed stadiums and raised their performances to the next level.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain, Aiden Markram, was the best performer and was awarded the Betway Player of the Season Award in Season 1.

There is great incentive to follow in Markram’s footsteps with R350 000 in prize money allocated for the Betway Player of the Season.

Paarl Royals’ opener, Jos Buttler, claimed the Batter of the Season and Sunrisers Eastern Cape left-arm spinner, Roelof van der Merwe, the Bowler of the Season. Both these awards will have prize money of R200 000 each.

The introduction of the “Rookie” for Season 2 will also intensify the battle for the Rising Star of the Season, which offers R100 0000 to the winner. Pretoria Capitals all-rounder, Eathan Bosch, holds the title after Season 1.

Betway SA20 Season 2 gets underway on 10 January at St George’s Park between defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings.

I see SA20 is the 2nd best paid league in the world, just shows you with private sector money a lot can happen and surely this will give a few more local lads a chance to shine and secure IPL contracts.

Season 2 of Betway SA20 is officially in town!
Six captains officially mark the start of competition at Captain’s Day in Cape Town

Monday, 08 January 2024: “Feel it, is it here!”

Betway SA20 Season 2 is just one day away and the excitement is reaching fever pitch.

The anticipation could be felt in the room when all six Betway SA20 franchise captains and League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, addressed the media at a press conference at Cape Town’s iconic Camps Bay, overlooking the picturesque Atlantic Ocean today.

League Commissioner, Smith, was overjoyed to welcome in Season 2 and expects to stage an even bigger and better ''Sportainment'' experience for the South African public.

“In my opinion, the teams look much stronger than in Season 1. There is incredible local talent and some superstars from around the world that have joined us. We know the competitive nature of the six franchises and we expect the cricketing stories to be fantastic again” Smith said.

“And then the fans … an event like this can’t be at this level without people coming into the grounds and supporting their teams and having a fantastic time with us over the next few weeks. A lot of hard work has gone into getting this platform ready.

“We want people to come out and have a wonderful time with us. If it is a Tuesday night at 5:30pm, then anyone in the country can have a great time. It’s catered for everyone.”

Durban’s Super Giants captain, Keshav Maharaj, echoed Smith’s sentiments, especially in terms of the crowds flocking back to Kingsmead.

“To be able to see the crowds back, especially from a Durban point of view, it’s been a while since we experienced that. The atmosphere was electric. There was a lot of fun and buzz at the ground. Fans really came in their numbers. Hopefully they build on that again this year and come back in their numbers,” Maharaj said.

The experienced Joburg Super Kings captain, Faf du Plessis, believes the League will become the cradle of South African cricket.

“We have seen over the years at the IPL what a difference it makes to young guys. It is a big stepping stone for the future of South African cricket. Some of the guys weren’t even born yet when I started playing. So for me, the superstars we can get here are very important for the tournament. Guys that many of the young players would only have seen on TV,” Du Plessis said.

MI Cape Town captain, Kieron Pollard, meanwhile, was ecstatic to be back in the Mother City and is hoping to turn around his team’s fortunes after a disappointing maiden season.

“I’ve been here before. I’ve enjoyed the city. I’ve enjoyed Newlands and I’ve enjoyed the fans. So, I’ve come and tried to make a difference. Obviously, from a team perspective, we didn’t do as well as we thought we should have,” Pollard said.

“So, now we just want to give the fans something to cheer about. For me, I’m in the twilight of my career, so it’s about enjoyment and hopefully passing on the experience to the younger guys.”

Paarl Royals skipper, David Miller, cannot wait for the derbies against local Western Cape rivals MI Cape Town and also his hometown side, Durban’s Super Giants.

“It's always going to be a big game against Polly’s team (MI Cape Town) and that’s always going to be a biggie between the two of us. Personally, coming from Durban and not being with them last season and this season, it is always nice to do well against them. Really excited about what lies ahead for this big competition,” Miller said.

It is not just the action on the field that has everyone waiting in anticipation, with Pretoria Capitals captain, Wayne Parnell, eager to get a taste of the unique atmosphere at Centurion.

“Centurion is a ground I’ve really enjoyed playing at, especially for the Proteas. And obviously being there last season with the Capitals was really special. We were lucky enough to have a great fan base last year and it's really nice to see the engagement for Season 2. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone braaing on the grass banks again,” Parnell said.

Meanwhile, last but definitely not least, defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain, Aiden Markram, is hoping for a repeat of the magic they produced last season.

“It was a fantastic competition last season. We got into the knockouts by hook or crook, and at least played two games of good cricket after that. It was quite special. It’s a great memory for us and we will give it our best crack again this year,” Markram said.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape kickstart Betway SA20 Season when they face Joburg Super Kings on Wednesday, 10 January at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. Tickets for the Final and Playoffs to be held at Newlands and Wanderers officially went on sale on Monday. For the full match schedule and to purchase tickets visit www.SA20.co.za
