What did she fail to act on in the six month period? She only lost her bag six weeks ago.

I'm sure the first thing you remember is to update an airline that your card was stolen - 9 months after you booked the flight.
 
from what I've experienced...

You're only suppose to be asked for the card if it's paid a week or less prior to the flight.

The OP mentions tickets bought months ago.

Maybe the person should point that out to the staff....

yeh - I'm trying to find that information - but as expected, their website is crap.

It also doesn't seem to say anything about requiring the credit card be present in their Terms of Carriage.

Sorry, I meant six weeks, not six months.... or whenever her bag was stolen.

Taking a flight is not just a quick run to the corner shop.
These days it is a significant financial investment.
And six weeks is more than enough time to remember to verify the flight and her booking.
Most people call the airline 48 hours before the flight to verify that all is in order.
If she just showed up on the day expecting all to be fine and dandy, then she is very naive.

Sorry, I have no sympathy for her. She bears most of the blame here.
She was lazy and now she lost out cos she was lazy.
 
I really really don't understand why anyone flies with SAA anymore when there are so many alternatives. I and many people I know will never ever ever in a million years (did I say ever) fly with SAA (ever!). A more pathetic useless bunch of people you will never find.

I have seen it many times.
But from what we can tell of this lady, she probably did not print out the T&C's when she made the booking.
I wonder if she even printed her receipt?

Flying qatar/delta in april 2012, both said bring same CC. Even Kulula when I took them to knysa almost didn't let my wife on due to her surname being different, which could have been sorted out been I not so lazy. 10-20 mins on a phone costs you nothing, it takes little to none effort to phone the airport and make sure. They can't just *let* people on the plane as much as you can't just go pickup your post with identification...

It is? for people that travel often its just an every day task - I don't recall the last time I 'verified' my booking.

Then you can probably expect to run into problems of this sort sooner or later.
The rest of us... we take precautions.

BTW, there is another reason why SAA wants the person to produce their credit card....
It is to prevent Travel Agents and Tour Companies from buying up block sections of seats at discounted rates.

And if you do lose the credit card or if you are buying the ticket for someone else there is supposedly a form to fill out.
I'm looking for the link now.
Might be wise to print out several copies of that form and keep them with you just in case.
The Wise person thinks ahead.
 
Guess i'll have to wait and see - in six years of frequent flying I have yet to run into a problem, besides arriving late, and being bumped off flights... and I used to fly between Johannesburg and Cape Town on a weekly basis.

I suppose a wise person also has their ID book on them at all times.... just in case they get asked for it in Pick 'n Pay.

Excellent point. I was asked for my ID in Pick and Pay here in Swakopmund just last Friday when I tried to use my South African credit card. Good think I keep it in my wallet.

I usually go a bit overboard before I travel. I phone the travel agent at least 2 times a week prior to my departure to find out if everything is in place, and that no changes has occured. I also scan in all my travel documents such as passport, visa and intenerary, and then e-mail it to myself to a web-based mail service such as g-mail. this is just in case I neeed a copy of those documents. Wherever in the world I can log in, download the files and make a printout. I also keep a complete set of copies of all the travel documents in my carry-on bagage, as well as in my check in bagage. I also keep copies of the scanned documents on a flash-drive shouls I need copies. at least once a week I log in onto the relevant airline's website to check if all is well. My cell phone is open for roaming, but I also purchase a Telkom World Call Card for further peach of mind should I need to make a call back home. In my carry on bag I always pack a cheap disposable toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste, as well as a spare shirt, socks and undies for in case my luggage gets delayed or worst case, stolen. Pants can be worn more than once, but a shirt, socks or undies not. I then will have something to fall back on in an emergency. I am currently going through this whole process as I am going to Baltimore, Philladelphia and Tulsa early next year.

Same here. Had to show my ID book at the boarding gate, is all. Simplest it has ever been!
Online checking is open 24 hours before take off, once you're checked that's all you have to do.
 
If her credit card was stolen along with her bags she should have a police case number and an affidavit detailing what happened. She should also have a bank issued replacement card. Why did she go to the airport without them? It is a well known fact that airlines require you to produce the original card when claiming a pre-booked ticket. It is their protection against accidentally handing over your ticket to the wrong party. Alternatively she should have completed the booking online and printed out her boarding pass from there. Sorry, we know SAA sucks, but she has to share some of the blame here.

She normally flies Kulula and they don't require the credit card at the airport. She has the replacement card but they won't accept that.
