SABC and pay-TV scrap

This way the whole license fee becomes a non-issue and the service providers make their money from the content / service-delivery they offer. Then competition becomes the deciding factor - which is as it should be.

What do you think the chances are South Africa will head in this direction before 2012 (if at all)?

Good idea, but unfortunately it would require some foresight by DoC, ICASA and SABC - which seems to be lacking thanks to our fantastic minister.

It's so bloody stupid this. Anyone who wants any sort of PayTV has to have a TV licence. Why must we subsidise the SABC even more by paying them more than once?

Would ICASA be the appropriate body to complain about the aspect of this legislation?
Is there some consumer watchdog one could protest to?

They probably figured that if Telkom can get away with charging you twice for the same copper when you use adsl, then why the hell not

Ha Ha Ha Ha....... On what planet is this baboon living? As far as i am concerned, the SABC can go to hell. We don't need them on Multichoice.

!CASA should not be forcing this "must carry" crap, and instead leave it to the Pay-TV service providers to determine whether their customers actually want to watch SAN{B}C channels - if their customers actually do want to watch these channels then the Pay-TV service providers would be obliged to strike a deal with the SAN{B}C to broadcast them.

“E.tv’s only source of revenue is advertising and given its public service obligations, e.tv should be afforded must carry status in the regulations,” said e.tv COO Bronwyn Keene-Young.

No entity should be allowed to have "must carry" privileges - regardless of their own delusions.

SABC CE Dali Mpofu says the arrangement with MultiChoice, which expires in March next year, is “irrelevant as a reference point” and will be subject to the new draft legislation.

Draft regulations cannot be enforced, only proper released non-draft regulations can be enforced, so Dully is wrong yet again.
