Here is my rant for the day.
I'm not a rich sw@nky pants with dstv so I've been watching the afcon on sabc, when there are premier league games I watch at my folks.
The sabc commentators are PATHETIC,I heard one say last night it was unfair that algeria are in the world cup and not egypt.
He was quickly corrected by the only decent commentator(wayne ihasportugesesurname)
Another thing that drives me nuts is the how bad they are,its not too hard to be a commentator but when they are obviously biased i go red.Whenever there is a big game on they only go on about "eto'o" and "drogba" and "toure" etc etc.

When angola played the opening match against mali they were going on about how fantasic angola are blah blah and then mali came back and continued slating them until it was 4-4.
I don't want to come off as racist but there is a black guy that sounds like he is from congo or somewhere and his english is horrible, they should atleast have some one that can speak english properly(other than wayne ihasportugesesurname)

When they commentate in zulu or xhosa I dont understand it but inderstand they have to cater for the majority of fans, even so the zulu commentator still goes on about the big players, nothing else.i.e this will happen 100 times a game: (the "z"s mean zulu)

"Eto'o zzzzzzzzz born in 1982 zzzZzzzzzzz inter milan zzzzzzzzz barcalona zzzzzzzzz Eto'o!!!!!!!!!!!zzzzzzzzz spanish league zzzzzzzz italian league zzzzzzzzzz top scorer 2004 zzzzzzzz cameroon zzzzzzzz champions zzzzzzz world cup zzzzzzz final 2006 zzzzzzzz semi final 2004 zzzzzzzzz ranked 11 zzzzzzzz Eto'o zzzzzzzz inter milan zzzzzzzz"

If you catch my drift,it seems like there job is to pimp the players and go on about their history for a good 40% of the match, half the time it sounds like they are sitting on wikipedia.

Even when Ivory coast were losing they were still going about them 75% of the time
I though commentators are supposed to be neutral.
Thats my rant done :D

Are the dstv commentators any better?

dunno, only watch a bit of the English Premier League.

The truth is the commentators all know the "big" players.
SS uses the commentary that comes with the feed - otherwise it's studio analysis where they have people who understand/know Africa football (Abedi Pele/"that african soccer journaist from Mali (I think)/

SABC have a guy named Cebo, this man finds it hard expressing himself in English, but they have upgraded him from Sotho to English commentary. You have obviously never listened to the English commentary during local games, they have a woman who used to play for the women's team doing commentary and she's horrible!!!

I agrree

I noticed that a few years ago. Whenever Bafana was playing, the english speaking commentators would spend like 60% of the time commenting on the history of the countries playing each other, as well as the background history of every single player on the field. eg Lance Davids, on loan to Russia, made his debut in ...these countries have met ...times...to teko modise, plies his trade in...debut in...

I they actually commented on the game and got excited, it would make the game more exciting.Marks Maponyane is quite good in this regard, as well as Deshi. But the other commentators and that lone white voice, they are the culprits!

It is as if they are trying so hard to make up for the fact that internationals only happens once every month or so, so they try to compress the history of everything/everybody on the field into the 90mins.

And also, some of those studio guests sound so biased, they actually sound dumb (there are 2 of them, I dont know names, one used to wear a mielie print shirt). for example, even though we should be celebrating African football in this continent, if a north african team (translated Egypt or Algeria arabic not black) team plays a team from the rest of Africa(translated "black" team), they refer to the north african team as "them" and other team as "us". That is so glaringly obvious Ive actually laughed!

Solution, get DSTV compact. Youl'll get better commentary plus a much better picture quality...:D
Downside, you have to budget R200 pm and you woud still not be able to watch other sports other than soccer....

I have heard her!AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!She drives me MAD.She gets so many things wrong,I remember once a team scored making it 3-0 and she said 4-0,it was even on the news highlight clip.

R200 is something I can afford but my folks live 2km away so its cheaper to drive and watch there, plus they have comfy couches and a 47".I would not watch anything else on dstv other than football.
My sabc reception is actually brilliant :)

If Bafana plays another African country they are bound to be biased, it's ineviteble as they broadcast to only South Africans and not to the whole world.

The Muslim North vs Christian South bias will always raise it's ugly head again every now then...

I can understand bafana bias but when its south africans commenting on a game that bafana are not involved in the comments should be neutral.

I agree, bt they dont only do that when Bafana plays, they do it for eg if Zambia plays them, or if Cameroon plays an arabic country

They really don't like the arab countries...Unless egypt are winning then it's all egypt.cue multiple repeats about how the captain has 175 caps x 100.

Well I suppose when viewed on a small TV in isolation SABC looks "brilliant", but try looking at it compared to DSTV:)
And what's with the blood red colours on SABC1?

I have a 32" and seriously the picture is great.Dstv picture I would rate a 9/10 and MY sabc pic a 7.5/10.Only thing I don't like is that sabc 1 seems a little saturated but I only watch football on sabc 1.

.
LOL and they keep comparing him to the previous Egypt player who had like 175 caps x 100 Hossam Hassan!

Theres something about the picture/graphics on SABC which makes the soccer look so amatuerish compared to the same game on Supersport, but I cant put my finger on it (and Ive compared both on a plasma, with good SABC reception). I dont know if the logo doesnt look professional, or is it the camera, I dont know? same with cricket

Saying it once or twice is ok but each time the commentry changes!?!?They also dont seem to know who is on the ball unless its eto'o or grogba or one of the big stars, atleast that chick does not commentate on internationals or i'd just not watch.

I think the colours on dstv are brighter and more distinguished.

The colours on SABC1 are so faint sometimes you wonder if you are not watching a match from the 1970's

Well "D".....I think that you are the one who is pathetic here, I think you should stick to your DSTV and watch soccer there if you have a problem with the Sabc commentators.

About that guy who commentate in Zulu I think that he is doing a good job, there is nothing wrong with him giving us history of the players...we as the viewers we would like to know more about our soccer stars and the teams. Atleast we watch soccer at the same time learning a lot of things about the players and the teams. "I know who are you talking about"

So as I've said stick to your dstv...stop criticising as if you are perfect in what ever it is that you do....The guy is doing his job well just like the rest....it shows that the reason why you watch soccer is to criticise.

hahaha that zulu commentator is a CLASSIC act.... SHAPPA BAFANA SHAPPA! so much enthusiasm and flair in his voice. I dont know what the f@#$@ he is saying but i still listen :D

You must an sabc commentator or have never listened to proper commentary if you think the mediocrity of the sabc is the best there is. By the way, sabc commentary used to be real good back in the day. They had Zama, Gleeson, and a host of other good commentators who they probably chucked to blacken the place and bring in the pretty boys they are so fond of.

No dear its you TV....get a new one and you will see there is no such thing...

My word how do you blame sabc for that!

I never said that they are the best there is....I said that they are doing a good job...the problem is that you are comparing a lot. Do not compare someone who commentate in Zulu with someone who us commentating in English, it is totally two different languages...and yes I do agree with you that Zama and Geeson used to be good...guess what they are no longer here...move on as much as they did. Give other poeple a chance, I'm sure that when they started they where not that good but along the way they became good. And dear I do listen to proper commentary thats the reason why I had picked up that the guy who is commentating in Zulu will tell you a lot of facts abot the players which on my side I think its good for him to share an info about the players.

We get to know thing that we did not know...

Please stick to your dstv, hence that I can see that the only reason you watch soccer it is because of the commentators not because you love soccer...
