South African household levy to fund SABC proposed

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has proposed a household levy as a new funding model to help the state broadcaster collect the necessary revenue to adhere to its public service mandate.

Its current funding model has relied on a combination of advertising and TV licence fees, which the SABC has struggled to collect, only receiving 13% of R4.7 billion invoiced fees in the 2023 financial year.

I've never been ok with TV licence fees and advertisements.

My math might be off but that would indicate roughly 2.3 million people were actually willing to pay their licences?

IMO with the number of official languages that they have to cater for they'll struggle to get enough viewers across the board.

Yes people like my parents. Those hardcore apartheid indoctrinated types who will pay for TV licenses, and until recently even paid for e-tolls.

The majority of South Africans believe getting things for free is right and good. Somebody in government spread this misguided faith.

What do?
I don't want things for free. I do however feel that the majority DO NOT WANT this thing even if it is free or not. That's a bigger point than the funding.

Here is a proposal..

Make SABC accessible via a set top box only.. Purchasing set top box requires valid ID, FICA, proof of address and whatever other bureaucratic nonsense you want to add.. once a year you must pay your media licence to continue receiving SABC to your set top box..

Now everyone who is interested in watching SABC can get access and SABC gets their income.. Those who don't care or don't watch SABC, don't have to pay..

BUT this will never happen, because it means the "rich" won't be able to subsidise the "poor"..

Well said.. Exactly as it should be. If the content is good, people will want to pay for it, if not, well... That's African socialism at work, a really bad service paid for with other people's money.

And if you own multiple properties, what happens if you renting out your office block to multiple tenants?.

This has a similar flaw like the NHI . I have 10 family members , i pay for all of them to be on medical aid and they all don't work. So now I just pay for myself for NHI and they get it for free

Collection through SARS? Hmmmmmm lol.... taking bets on how long it takes before a "progressive media household levy" is suggested, the more you earn, the higher your levy will be. Of course they will first introduce it as a flat fee, and then start with this sh** 5 years later.

You read it here first!
