SABC to cut COPE coverage
CHRIS BATHEMBU
JOHANNESBURG - The SABC has slashed live TV coverage of the Congress of the People’s (COPE’s) manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth this weekend, despite earlier indications that the event was to be covered.
In a letter to COPE yesterday, the SABC’s Xolani Xundu said a news management meeting took a decision to cross live to the COPE’s manifesto launch for just five minutes tomorrow.
The SABC gave the ANC extensive live coverage when it launched its manifesto in East London two weeks ago.
This is seen as a blow to COPE, which is expected to parade high-profile leaders who defected from the ruling party.
Among them are former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and businessman Saki Macozoma.
COPE is appealing the decision.
Spokesman Sipho Ngwema said: “We have been reliably informed that the SABC has been under a lot of pressure from Luthuli House not to give us full coverage.”
Ngwema claimed that some ANC leaders had issued the SABC management an “ultimatum” after the COPE inaugural launch in Bloemfontein was given full coverage.
Ngwema said since then the SABC’s coverage of COPE had dropped.
“Our manifesto rally passes all the tests in terms of newsworthiness and public interest but does not pass the ANC test,” Ngwema said.
The ANC has denied any link to the saga.
Spokesman Carl Niehaus initially laughed when contacted by The Citizen on the matter.
He later said: “This is cheap propaganda from COPE.
“It’s nonsense. If they have a problem with the SABC they should sort it out.”

E-tv will cover it live, delayed, looping every 15 min

What about the other political parties? Fair's fair. Oh wait, this isn't a democracy.

I think the citizen is biased towards COPE in the way they report. Surely they know that COPE does not have representation in parliament. According to SABC rules, only parties represented in Parly, with at least 1% of the vote can have their manifesto launch covered live.

Else I'm going to register my own party tommorow and demand live coverage of my manifesto launch next weekend.

Its always nice to know who's in bed with Zuma, and Xolani Xundu is today's lucky winner.

True. But ANC might just change that SABC's rule. Obviously ANC is scared of COPE. I have to applaud COPE for using the media so efficiently. I mean the party is hardly 2 months old.

Problem with that rule is they made it up after COPE was launched.

Also, COPE is obviously significant news because it's the single biggest challenger to the ANC in the next election. They'll have much, much more than 1% of the vote and everybody knows it. Why wouldn't a TV network broadcast a newsworthy event? Because it's not impartial.

Do you mean to tell me that a party launching with 500000 registered members is not newsworthy?

Oh yeah it is newsworthy, but not worthy of live coverage. SABC will not disrupt their normal programming for a party that is yet to make its mark. But like I said E-tv will most probably cover it live.
The former ANC members in COPE have their first taste of being on the other side of SABC's bias. :D
