SABC 'wins' broadcast battle

I think details will emerge as they're finalised. Admittedly, the SABC has said all along that they had a concrete case, and weren't worried about losing the rights at all, so I'm sure Supersport had some contingency plans in place in case this happened...

So SABC who only managed to screen 50 odd games last year is going to screen 140 games this year. Thats 3 hours of TV every 2.5 days lost to other programs and they only have 4 channels. May as well wipe out one of the channels and call it SABC sport. Why did they not just come to some arrangement with MNet and broadcast the main game every weekend and get some cash in the kitty from selling on the rights.

YAYYY.. the PSL was clearly going to cut in to the schedules of more important games on supersport :)

When did they get a fourth channel

This is a another fcuking farce.

That moron from DSTV, sat in front of the media and acted all happy and congratualted the other w@nker from SABC. Did dstv even bother to stand their ground on this?

This whole deal(s) was a disgrace.

PSL are also a bunch of loosers....

This whole thing stinks and everyone involved gets mampara of the year.

I can guarantee you certain individuals will be driving around in new SUV's in a couple of weeks - expect to see the Carte Blanche Expose soon... :D You did not seriously expect the SANC to loose?

I'm pretty sure DSTV had a lot of behind the scenes pressure applied to them from govt, especially regarding licence renewals etc.

I don't get it. How can Supersport be happy with this? What are the financial implications? Who's gonna be paying what to who?

I'd imagine that supersport are happy because the SABC is paying to broadcast the matches. With their backs against the wall, the SABC weren't in a great position to haggle.

I heard the news report on the radio this morning: Supersport's CEO saying what a great deal it was, everybody wins etc. He turns to Dali Mpofu and says something about how the SABC wins, "right Dali?". And gets a grunt in response from mpofu. :)

FWIW, I think that this is great as a soccer fan. Miore matches, free to air, and presumably with Supersport's more professional production.

If ever gvt cared they would have ensured that SABC shows us more than only 128 matches last season, half of which were delayed broadcasts anyway.

.

Saw that on telly, needed to rub my eyes cause i couldnt believe what i was hearing/seeing.

Imagine winning something, fairly and squarly, and then the decision being reversed at a later stage, and then the winning company (dstv) being all cosy with the losers (sabc).

This whole process irratates the **** out of me.

I didn't say they care, they just don't like to see their pet SABC lose. :D

But they lost anyway. They are now buying rights from the middle man. They could have dialled direct had they not been so arrogant. I don't like that Dali Mpofu. Somehow he just irritates the sh#t out of me:eek:

The process wasn't reversed - Supersport bought the rights, then sold on some of the rights to the SABC. I haven't seen a price mentioned, but I imagine that Supersport was able to name their price.

I'd also be pretty pleased with myself if I'd bought the rights to something, and then been able to sell them to my competitor when he was in a position where he had to pay your price.

If you have made a profit that is!
SuperSport paid premium for these rights which is the reason the SABC lost out initially. They expected it all to just fall in their lap as usual, arrogance personified.

SuperSport are still going to broadcast the games so the price that the SABC has effectively paid to do the same will be very interesting to see.
I doubt very much the PSL dropped the initial selling price agreed to with SuperSport.

Where the SABC has won is that they get to broadcast all the games they want, it must've cost them though, so in effect, if they paid a market related price for the rights then it is win win all round, not all to SABC.
If that makes any sense.

True, I just wonder if they paid the market rate? He irritates me too. :D

No mention of the amount paid, anywhere. The other factor to bear in mind is that Supersport signed a three-year deal with the PSL, and AFAIK this SABC deal is just for this year.
