Sabc's Big Spending Plans

What an absolute waste of money.
SABC funded 700mil, Sentech funded 300mil.
You could launch at least one sattelite and give everybody free decoders for that kind of money, dammit. Will the governmint cash cow ever stop just paying, and think of alternatives for a change?

<">This network must be able to carry up to 40 Gbit/s of video data. At present, SA's international Internet bandwidth amounts to less than 1 Gbit/s.</">

They noticed. LOL. All in the name of a sport.
So - years and years of fighting and asking and pleading and then soccer comes along and we may get 40 Gbit/s bandwdth. WOW. Viva la Football.

HDTV only in 2014? By then the Japanese will have tv streamed directly into their dreams.

I'm a bit concerned that all these "upgrades" are being done in fact to service the international market (and even then only because they're forced to by FIFA), had we never had the soccer world cup we would still be in the dark ages because obviously the South African public doesn't matter.

The SABC will install the technology necessary to produce high-definition television (HDTV) in time for the soccer World Cup in 2010.
Yay!
But the bad news is that only overseas viewers will be able to watch their favourite teams in high definition. South Africans will have to wait until the 2014 soccer showcase, if not longer.
Damn! wheres that cloth to wipe this tea from my desk.

2014 - 2005 = 9 yrs,
9 * 250 = R2250 per license (excluding yearly increases)
how many licenses are paid each year? i'll guess 15 mil ?!
so 15 mil * 2250 = R 33 billion and we still watch cr@p!

Agreed. I see now they are pushing the GAutrain project to be finished by 2010.
Yah neh... :o

Ahh well I am not happy that I wont be able to enjoy the benefits of this technology until 2014.

On the other hand I am happy that they are moving forward. At least they have some growth strategy as opposed to no strategy at all.

I wonder if the business case included being able to collect more licensing revenue as digital suggests that they would be able to disable a signal to your tv set if you have not paid ? :p

HDTV is awesome but hardly anyone has high res high def TV's here anyways and loads won't untill around 2010, so untill then get yourself a nice big LCD and download TV eps and burn em to DVD :)

HDTV for South Africans? NO!

Better Internet performance for SA net users? NO!

HDTV for Americans and Japanese? YES!!! A 700 million Rand YES!!!!

Shows just how much we matter to the TV and Inet bloodsuckers!

I think this lack in HDTV technology is worse than Telkom / ADSL. HDTV should be main priority :)

Nothing like good quality p0rn

The US, UK, Japanese markets already have HDTV's at stores - although they are still in their infancy and are quite expensive.
