Hi guys

So I'm doing things a bit backwards with regards to holidaying in Sabie (or anywhere for that matter). Just booked accomodation for 4 nights end of April. So, what is there to do in Sabie and the surrounds? Does anyone know how far away the nearest gate at KNP is, and if it is worth a day trip? Are the waterfalls in the area -that- cool to see?

Thinking about golfing at Sabie Country Club - but other than that I have two days to kill.

Any ideas?

There's nothing actually worthwhile in Sabie IMHO, there are waterfalls just outside Sabie, Crystal Springs and another which evades me. If you want you could take a road trip past Sabie to Graskop, Pilgrims Rest etc. Go see God's Window, take some old photos in Pilgrim (you pose, photographer takes the pics etc.). There's lots to see and do that way.

If you want to go to Kruger you need to head to Hazyview and enter via Numbi, Phabeni or Kruger Gate, Phabeni being the nearest.

All in all if you need any other advice, let me know, I've lived here almost 20 years :p ;) :D

Is it the MacMac waterfalls? Pilgrim's rest and God's Window seems like an option! Point of the holiday would be to just chillax and do nothing really :)

Do you know the distance and/or travelling time to Phabeni Gate? What time should one be at the gate before its official opening?

Thanks for the offer! If any issues pop up planning the interany I will be sure to throw a question your way.

It is my first official holiday and first time going to KNP so I am quite excited :)

I suggest you check the SANPARKS website for details on opening and closing times: http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/

There's no specific time you have to be there and I think the gates open at 7. I've entered the Park at 12am and later, so there's no set rule that you have to be there early.

Here's the Google Map for Phabeni:

I suggest if Possible you enter at Numbi Gate rather, as you will be able to Exit at Kruger or Phabeni and get more time to see a large part of the Park.

MacMac falls it a bit further on out of Sabie:

Edit: Closing time of the Gates at Kruger is essential. You don't want to be stuck in the park at night :p

$$$ expensive too :p I haven't done any of that in all my time in the Lowveld, it's just too bloody expensive.

The Zip lines and tubing were not that bad.
But the others are expensive.
I use my holiday fund that I put cash into the whole year. :o

I should probably buy gold or something :o

Misty mountains is a nice place to stay.

Izzy. It's hot.

Chilly in the mornings and evenings but we vaalies find it hot.
:D

Do not ask Tera. Tera freeezzes his behind of when it is 27.

oke oke maybe he can handle 25 but that is snow jacket weather for our friends down in the lowveld :D :D

haha! I actually sweat my rear off when it's over 25. I'm not climatized in all my time here. I was a winter baby, born in a cold winter in Bethlehem in Free State, so yes, I'm definitely more geared towards the cold :p

Seems like I should pack for both chilly weather and "omg-I-am-melting" weather!

Thanks for all the assistance so far! Gecko-ing seems quite cool :)

Will definitely be taking advantage of your advice to enter at Numbi Gate and exit at Phabeni/Kruger Gate.

I forgot that you were born there.

I hate the cold. I can not believe I survived 4 years in that freezer!!

If you want to go into Kruger as a day visitor, I would suggest that you book your place beforehand. If you don't, you might end up to being able to enter the Park after standing in a cue for a few hours (potentially).

KNP gate is really close to Sabie. Pilgrims Rest, Gods Window & that Cheeta place is not to far off. There is quad biking, rafting and other activities close by.

Was there in September, really nice place to go and September it's not to hot, Kruger National Park is not really that close from Sabie, it's probably about 40km or so away? But when you driving around there you actually forget distances as you drive through some of the most beautiful scenery, except for the mountain road from Graskop to Pilgrims Rest that is fun and games when it's misty ;-). There is also the Pinnacle to see just before Gods Window as you leave Graskop it's like 2 minutes out, there is the Mac Mac Falls, Mac Mac Pools, Berlin Falls etc... Really nice part of SA, loved our time there.
Oh also in Sabie if you want a free cup of coffee go visit the tourist information center, it actually says join us for a cup of coffee, nice little things about small towns.

Forgot we actually stayed in Hazyview (Sabie River Sun) which is not in Sabie and much closer to the Kruger gate. Can't remember the distance to Sabie although I did drive there.

Sabi River Sun and Sabie are two very different places ;-). Though I honestly actually didn't find a lot to do in Sabie itself, it was mostly the surrounding areas, and it's a lot of hiking too :-D.
