The South African Communist Party (SACP) may decide in July to withdraw from the coalition that has ruled since the end of apartheid, threatening to shatter decades of cooperation between leftists and moderate black nationalists.

Spurred by a rise in membership and growing disenchantment with what it sees as the pro-business direction of government, the SACP is considering running its own slate of candidates in elections beginning in 2009.

Well get on with it SACP.
Really tiring to hear blow by blow accounts of this split.
One cannot cling on to mummy your whole life. :p

Its better if they split ... competition is always a good thing .. for the electorate in this case ... i.e us ;)

They should stop talking and follow Nike's advice.

If they do split they'll be pretty insignificant anyway.

Unless they join a coalition that represents its members, and not just The Only Party That Matters™. SACP is insignificant within the ANC coalition anyway, since the ANC doesn't actually share power.

If the SACP jumps ship, COSATU may well do the same, and I believe THAT would be a significant development.

A coalition with who? Most of the electorate will mindlessly vote ANC no matter who happens to be in the running. IMO if there ever is a credible threat to the ANC it could get ugly...

What you may find is the SACP finding support with the Trade Unions?

Probably but even an SACP-COSATU coalition wouldn't get that many votes I don't think.

Hard to say.
Depends on where Trade Unions are going.
Are they there to look after their members pay demands, working conditions or is it more than that.

I doubt that. Most union members are ANC suporters before they are union members. I believe Cosatu's support is overrated in this instance. If Cosatu jumps they'll definitely be commiting suicide. I would love for them to jump though.

Mindlessly? I don't think they're being mindless boet. Apartheid is still very fresh in many people's minds, and it's gonna take a very big #@Uck up on the ANC's part for anyone to unseat them. The nats did a brilliant job of alienating black people in this country. On the other hand, maybe SACP/Cosatu can provide this all needed opposition.

I didn't mean for it to be as pejorative as it probably sounded. :) What I mean is that in essence the ANC has a very strong "brand" and it would take a lot for any other party to overcome that, even if they did have better policies for the electorate etc. I'm not saying its necessarily right or wrong but it is reality. I think even Zuma on an SACP-COSATU ticket wouldn't take away the ANC's majority, they may lose 10% of the vote or so in a worst case scenario but they'd still be comfortably above 50%, whereas Zuma running for the ANC would win, even if it was the same candidate and same policies etc.

perhaps the SACP needs to first decide what they want.
saw on the news the other night, old SACP bigshot Blade, with a mo3rse banner behind their desk "We demand democracy".... I thought to myself WTF?!
As far as I know democracy is one thing that does NOT go with communism at all... perhaps u'r right... the sheep don't know who theyre following, or why, they just go with the flow... :D
