This is ridiculous - citypress.co.za/Sport/News/Saf… - SAFA looking to change CAN qualifying rules after the event. Utterly, utterly shameful.

What case can SAFA possibly have? They're too stupid/lazy to understand the rules? They have a larger TV market than Niger?

Mind, it was clear Nigeria were reserve hosts for the 2013 CAN, so who knows what CAF will do.

these stupid fools want to change the rules after the competition?

Absolutely pathetic. Why the hell not just win our last home game instead of playing for a draw ???? And if that was the game plan, then why not read the bloody rules BEFORE the frikken game???

The whole lot should be fired.

Morons. Everything with SA football is wrong, from the ground up. Sack the lot, give the job to people with strategic vision and wait until their efforts bare fruit.

SAFA are a jobs for pals and cronies scam. Hiding behind FIFA's no interference skirts they're untouchable.

This will get tossed out. Goal differance and head to head each have draw backs. FIFA uses goal differance but other confederations use head to head too.

What is head to head between SA and Niger ?
Niger vs SL? SA vs SL?
My understanding of head to head is between two teams when it's a league format. Am I wrong in my interpretation of head to head?

It would be head to head between Niger, Sierra Leone and SA.

Whoever has the best record between those 3 teams in league format would be the "head to head" winner.

I was typing on my phone, so head to head was quicker to type, the offical rule says this: "The order of tie-breakers used when two or more team have the equal number of points is:

1.Number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned;"

It must be stated that Both CAF and SAFA are idiots.
Rules are (FIFA? or logic) if 2 teams are equal on points then its Head to head, if its 3 teams, then its goal difference.

So it seems that SAFA just assumed it and never check the CAF rules.

Why are CAF idiots? The rule of 'head to head' even for 3 or more teams does have some merits. Also, while FIFA uses goal difference as its first tie breaker, it doesn't force the confederations to do the same.

Ok this makes sense. I was thinking how on earth can you apply head-to-head when you have three teams involved in a tie?
You might even end up with a "rock - paper - scissors" kind of scenario for example whereby Niger beats
better SL, Sl beats SA and SA beats Niger:D

Yeah, head to head doesn't sound right when applied to 3 teams, it was just easier to type.

As for rock-paper-scissors, the last way to decide who qualifies is drawing of lots!

SAFA are idiots... CAF rules clearly states:

In case of equality of points between two or more teams, after all the group matches, the ranking of the teams shall be established according to the following criteria:

14.1 Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.2. Best goal difference in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the concerned teams;
14.4. Greater number of away goals scored in the direct matches between the concerned teams;
14.5. Goal difference in all the group matches;
14.6. Greatest number of goals scored in all the group matches;
14.7. A drawing of lots by the Organising Committee of CAF.

Therefore, in application of rule 14.1 CAF has considered only results of matches between the concerned teams, i.e. Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone (discounting Egypt as the bottom team with 5 points - hence not concerned anymore), resulting in the following ranking based on 4 matches played by each teams concerned:
- Niger: 6 points
- South Africa : 5 points
- Sierra Leone : 5 points.

SAFA and Pitso are retards thinking they a draw will be sufficient enough to qualify when playing @ home against Sierra Leone what should one do? Go for the WIN regardless of the points - why? If you want to be winners surely the mentality is to WIN every match you come across...

What right do you have to go contest a ruling - written years ago when you as a team/nation FAIL to win the matches set out against you???

Did you see SARU telling our Bokke to lose our last two matches to ensure we have a easier route to the final??? No even if they did do you think our players would agree to it? The principle is to WIN every match we come across!

Bottom line is Pitso and the whole of SAFA must offer to resign or be fired. Santana did not qualify for AFCON 2010 - they kept him and it went down hill from there. I'm afraid we need to arrest the slide before it's too late. I'm sure we won't qualify for Brazil either. We could not do it when there were 14 places available. How can we hope to qualify where there are only 5 slots ?

Time to give this job to Shakes Mashaba. Pitso is just too defensive minded. How could he play with a lone striker at home against Sierra Leone when we needed a win plus a favourable result elsewhere ? :twisted:

I would have thought we were going to go all guns blazing with 3 or 4 strikers...to make sure our job was done regardless of what happened in Egypt. Had we done just that, we wouldn't be in this mess now.

Its really funny that they are contesting that the rule is unfair. La liga and Serie a has been using this for years since there was no time for extra playoff games. Never heard anyone complain about it and all presidents in both leagues love to moan.

link to the full article. Minister angry at South Africa
"This was a serious blunder. The best thing is to accept the defeat and mediocrity on the part of the leadership and move on," Mbalula said. He said he expected more from administrators and now believed they should publicly ask for forgiveness. "I am very shocked that that apology has not come up and at the same time people are still appealing. The country has been seriously let down. SAFA must be ashamed."

Mbalula said the mistake was serious enough to merit resignations from the office. "People excuse themselves from positions in situations like this," he said. "They say, 'I will resign. I failed the country. I apologise. I will go on with my job elsewhere'. I wanted SAFA to say, 'There will be consequences. We are looking into this matter. We are investigating and then we will decide'."

With SAFA showing no signs of making anyone pay for the error, Mbalula went on to criticise their gameplan and said that under no circumstances should the national team aim for a stalemate. "You can't be proud to play for a draw in the national interest. National interest means you must die for the jersey," he said. "You can't say in public that you played for a draw because you were relying on another game. It's anti-national interest." Bafana Bafana believed that Egypt's 3-0 victory over Niger would be enough for them to qualify and have become notorious for their defensive style of play, even in games they would be expected to win.

The team did not escape the minister's wrath and he saved the most scathing of comments for them. "Bafana Bafana don't understand what it means to be South African. They didn't try," he said. "It is a point about our sports that people must understand. To don that jersey is national pride, not a gift from your mother or your father. It's not playing for Moroka Swallows - it's playing for the national team. It's not privatised. These people don't understand what it means to be in the national team."

I have to admit that he is right. The way that SAFA are behaving is embarrassing.
