Safari issue on Telkom

ipconfig/all won't work on a mac. Try:

ifconfig en0

and

ifconfig en1

Look for a line starting with 'inet' - if there isn't one, the router isn't giving you an IP address (i.e. DHCP is failing). If there is one, it should be something like 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x. If you get that, move on to the gateway:

route get default

look for a line starting with 'gateway' - this should be the router's IP. Try to ping it. Does it work? If yes, the problem is the router.

Thanks everyone... I'm due to speak to the MiL soon, so I'll try and go through some of the basics with her.

I'll probably stick to the Network Utility app for pinging, she's not technical at all so her and terminal wont mix!

I may have to just phone Telkom customer services from here.

Seriously, I don't know how you guys cope! The annoying thing is she feels better off with her Windows 98 machine and dial up connection, we need to show her what she's missing out on!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll let you know how we get on... good thing I got free VOIP calls to SA!!

Thanks , but the Mac is talking to the router just fine, the router address is 10.0.0.2 and and dhcp has assigned a vild ip to the mac.

She can access the web interface on the router by typing in the routers IP in Safari and entering a username and password.

So I don't think pinging the router is going to make a difference.

She doesn't need to be technical. She only needs to be able to type and read - same as she would do in the network utility.

I may have to just phone Telkom customer services from here.

Trust me, you want to leave that as your very last option.

OK, if she can get that far, get her to read you the router's public IP and gateway. The you try to ping the router's public IP and let her try to ping the router's gateway.

This is were I think I tripped up a bit.

She read me the WAN config with a 41. something iP and a different 41. primary DNS.

I tried pinging the IP address and nothing but I wasnt sure if there was a setting on the Billion Router to stop that.

What should the Gateway say?

Here's the part from the user manual, she read it out to me and it matches apart from the obvious difference in IP and Primary DNS..

Weird -- mtnns ???

Anyway you can see where it is breaking.

Your subnet mask looks wrong ?????

255.255.255.255

Maybe that should be

255.255.255.0

thanks, but that pic is from the user manual!

I cant get a screenshot of her router!

Im no expert at all but just comparing my stuff to yours.....my default gateway is the same as my ip address.....and not 0.0.0.0 like yours.

My WAN subnet is 255.255.255.255 and the local subnet is 255.255.255.0 (i see now that how you have it from the manual ...haha...so my rambling comparisons dont count)

Just a side note on mine and some other Telkom versions of the Billiion router. I can connect wirelessly once, then on a second attempt Im blocked somehow. I have to power down the router and power it back up again in order to re-connect wirelessly.

Maybe you can get the correct ones from her -- she can read them out to you.

If you can access the router via it's web interface then you should be able to see this screen

IF we have those correct figures should be able to see if it is working.

Thanks leftfoot, I've tried powering down the router, same result.

The screen grab is from the user manual, so I'm not sure thats what my mother in law has as the default gateway.

Thanks MW, I tried on Sunday and it wouldnt let me. Ping failed and could not access it from here, but I'm not sure if thats a security setting on the router and I dont know if I could handle getting her to setup port forwarding.

All this led be to believe it was more a safari issue but I'm having second thoughts and it might be a telkom / router issue...

(in which case I'm sorry if its in the wrong section!!)

Ok, update: Confirmed we are on an all-in package 'do level-1' with telkom...

Spoke to Telkom, they confirmed everything is ok, so going to attempt the router

Should be straight forward to see whether it is Safari or connectivity.

People always like to blame Telkom straight off. Frequently the problem is elsewhere.

Well if she can access the router setup via the web browser internally , then she should be able to access that page that should show the settings.

Have a scratch in the ADSL section -- ADSL & ISP. Lot of info there from people with Telkom as their ISP and with the same / similar router.

These things are always a pain in the beginning when setting up and a learning curve for people that have not done it before.

Thanks again MW, and everyone else... I'm gonna post in the ADSL section, but I'm still thinking it might be a mac thing, why would diagnostics say its connected but pinging a local server fails....

Firewall

Thanks again MW, and everyone else... I'm gonna post in the ADSL section, but I'm still thinking it might be a mac thing, why would diagnostics say its connected but pinging a local server fails....

A lot of these routers do have security features -- which include blocking ICMP -- plus other firewall like stuff

The other thing is that a lot of local servers do not allow a return ping -- why I do not know -- security by obscurity.

If you are not an expert / fundi the only way is to work through stuff by elimination.
ie connect up a Windows box -- what happens -- it works OK -- problem is with the Mac etc etc and so on.

Please let us know when you have your problem solved and what it was. Sometimes just a small niggly thing.

Update: you were right to try telkom.co.za/verifyadsl she could access that, so she calls 10215 to get her order number and they talk her through some steps to work out the router had a problem!!

I'm not sure what the problem was, it sounds like the router was hanging and they made her pull out the routers cables and do a whole new setup which seems to have worked.

I cannot thank you guys enough for your help, the mother in law and my wife thank you too!

My wife is going out there next month, I'm going to train her to setup remote desktop and remote access for the router!!

Digicape in Joburg does call-outs, seems to me it's going to be less painful if you just get them in to look at it.
