I have noticed that with torrents (on my 384 line) - if I set my upload speed to unlimited, then the max uploading starts effecting my download speeds and general browsing speeds. If I limit the upload speed to 5/6kbps then download speed is not effected.

Does anyone know why this is - and also what the highest upload speed is on a 384 line without effecting downloads?

80% of max = ~11kbps.

Browsing doesn't mix well with torrents on a 384k line. If you have to, limit speeds briefly, but be sure to put them back up again asap.

384k lines are only really useful if left on 24/7, unless you manage it very carefully- slow and steady can make up for the limits of the line :)

Everytime you download something, or browse, you have requests that go out. If the outgoing pipe is 100% utilised, then the rquests for the downlaods and http browsing is qued till its turn, as you wait for it to go out, browsers will be waiting, and downloads will wait for the next segment to be sent.

What is the max upload on a 384 line - presume it is 128/8 = 16kb/s?

Hence 80% would be 12.8kb/s?

Or do I need to reduce my figures for Telkom's "overhead"?

Not too sure... Rule of thumb is 11kb/s. Think that is the standard ~80% (maybe it's more??) of the tested line speed.

Theoretical is 16, actual is a bit less :)

Check the FAQ on your torrent site. Ask the other users, or search their forums. Some frown upon limiting uploads- best to be aware of that if it's the case...

On my 4096/512 line, I've found that a safe option is to limit upload speeds to 40kb/s (i.e. 320 kbps) so as not to affect my download speed.

What stormwalkerza said for the simple explanation.

So far today I have had it up to 11kb/s before it affected my browsing...... tried 12 but pages started to slow down.... will stick 11 for now

On Utorrent, 6kb/sec is perfect upload speed, gives you full download speed. Been using this setting for years. Anything higher will limit the download.

i guess it will happen on all lines regardless of speed, that the upstream will get saturated. when that happens the ACKs don't get thru when they need to,, affecting your download speed and also browsing and everything else.
the acceptable is never to limit below 80% of your theoretical max, so as you say, 11kB/s is spot on. Personally i keep mine at 12, sure things are slugish but least things don't timeout.

lastly, limiting to 6kB/s is not a good idea, unless you want to only be welcome on those international public trackers :) also that could lead to a lower download speed, because peers tend to automatially throttle the speed at what they upload when they don't recipricate
