Safest colour for a car? Does it matter?

It is said that in snowy countries it is considered a higher risk to drive a white car or even a silver one. Here in SA it seems that black cars are considered a high risk, or at least they were a few years ago anyway.

Is there any truth is in this? Are some cars really more prone to be in accidents or is this just an old wives tale.

I do find though that sometimes you can't see silver cars on the horizon that well.

Was told once that red and black cars are considered higher risk in the insurance industry. White cars statistically supposed to be the safest. No idea how much truth there is in that.

white iis the probably the most common colour, thus is stands to reason that they will be in the most accidents...

...but i know with my insurance a black car has a higher premium than a white one - but it probably has to do with white vs metalic paint

I have always thought that in SA a white or silver car would be safe because we have sunshine most of the times so you will be bright and visible for miles ahead on the black tarmac. In contrast you would be better off in a black car in places with lots of snow, except at night cause then you kinda blend in.

Personally I have gotten a lot of flack (mostly from VAG drivers) for my oriental blue Corsa which has been dubbed "teal gay blue" I do think it is a safe colour and even if its not, she looks very good with it (much better than I ever will) :

I would say in the Cape a silver/grey is the worst. Never had an accident but a couple of times I've nearly ridden into these cars by not seeing them in the rain - also helps that many people do believe in driving with lights on.

People who choose to drive darker colored cars tend to be more aggressive drivers, while people driving lighter colored cars are less prone to road rage/ aggressiveness. This theory has been proven wrong from what I have seen.

Wow that's stretching it a bit I would say. I could believe that if they attached certain brands to probable behaviour, but colour, not so sure about that.

I don't see what relevance driver behaviour, how easy it is to see etc have. Surely the insurance companies use statistics gained from experience and not what someone happens to think about a colour or a driver?

Most accidents happen at night, hence why insurance charges more to insure black cars, that and they think people who drive black cars are more reckless as per their surveys.
