Saix Local with Saix SMTP Access Wanted

Hi,

The company I currently work for are looking for SAIX LOCAL ONLY accounts that provide smtp access to the saix mail server - we are looking to buy between 100-200gb of local only saix bandwidth a month - any isps that can provide this for us? It seems the Telkom local only after your blended usage is not allowing us access to the saix smtp server - is anyone else experiencing this?

Just buy a SAIX local only account from WebAfrica. It works with smtp.saix.net.
 
That's weird, Axxess explicitly state no access to smtp.saix.net (EDIT: on thier local only accounts) and WebAfrica allows it, does this mean that these are two "flavours" of local only? I always thought all local SAIX accounts were the same ?!

Maybe this explains why WebAfrica is 90% more expensive than Axxess...

Ok so Hilton - you sir are incorrect :P

Just mailed WA and they DO NOT ALLOW ACCESS to the SAIX smtp server on their local only SAIX accounts - anyone else have an alternative - we need local only SAIX that has access to the SAIX SMTP server - anyone got an ISP they care to mention - Openweb/WA - step up to the plate on this maybe?

Well it's working for me. I'm using both a normal shaped account plus a local only account and all my local bandwidth is via the local only account.

Perhaps I'm just lucky.........
 
it's highly unlikely it will happen. the smtp server would have to use international say if you are sending to google?

Cough cough.

I've blinked out the last octet of the local only IP that I've been assigned but it's quite clear that the email was relayed via smtp.saix.net.

The local only gateway is 165.146.152.1

Seems to work for me. In fact to doubly triply prove it, I disabled my normal shaped account and then sent the email.

Perhaps I should just keep quiet.
 
41.144.6.xxx is not an local only account
 
Ok then I'm not saying anything more. Seems I have a really cool deal.
 
i think you made a booboo!

but i'll test cause thinking of my configuration in my head my connection should also be going over the local account.

but back to the topic, if you are sending 200gb of email a month the saix server is gonna blacklist you anyway.

200gb of emails? What the hell are you guys sending that chows so much cap?

Anyway...I doubt you will find what you are looking for. No ISP is going to sell you a product that requires intl bandwidth at local-only prices.

An enterprise style uncapped account is you best bet imo....but its going to be a lot more expensive than 200gb local.

If you're splitting bandwidth over local and international accounts RouteSentry or a router script, etc, the script is most likely configured to route smtp.saix.net over the international account. I know for a fact that the rt script here on ipcop is hard-coded to do so.

No, you have it wrong, we dont wish to send 200gb of email through the local accounts.

We are a software company that provides courier software and we want local access for our local clients - but the program has to send daily reports to us via email , hence no smtp access means that we use IS accounts which are slow and mail being delivered is never a guarantee.

We don't want to use the accounts to spam mail to international servers, far from it. Currently we buy approx 200gb of IS local from WA, but we would prefer faster saix local that has smtp access - simply because it is faster and more reliable - an uncapped account would not work as we run several accounts at several client sites...

Yeah we will most likely have to modify the linux servers ourselves - something that we can do but would prefer an easier solution hence accounts that would allow stmp via local saix.

The point I making is not that the 200gb is a problem...but rather that "email through local" is a problem. Not sure how to explain this, but I'll give it a shot:

A fully functioning SMTP server implies international access down the line somewhere. Hence the ISP won't allow you to access a resource that costs them intl bandwidth while only paying for local on your side. Hence they do not allow you to connect with local only. The fact that you are only sending to people in SA doesn't matter in this case.

You would need a SMTP server that only forwards emails to addresses within SA and discards the rest...aka a broken SMTP server. Good luck finding one of those.

The SMTP protocol itself doesn't contain provisions to dictate the path that the email will take....the servers handle the routing.

I hope I'm making sense...:o

Yeah no worries - I get what you are saying - I've found an ISP that charges R25 a gig for local - but they do allow smtp access - yes it is the saix backbone - maybe a relic from days gone by that people have forgotten to change - like the old ISPS bought over by IS that allow 10 concurrent connections on uncapped.

Oh well, we will probably just do routing on our linux boxes and run a local/int account - wanted to do something more seamless but heh such is life.

Trust me, it is.

1. The account costs me R19 from WA

2. When I use only this account on my router, I can send email via smtp.saix.net

3. When I use only this account on my router, I cannot browse international sites

4. When I try this same scenario with another [email protected]l account on another router at another site I get the same results.

5. I called WA and they confirmed that a SAIX local only account WILL allow the use of smtp.saix.net (but I knew this already).

Sorry if it doesn't work for you but it's working for me and I'm just a happy chappy.

To the OP, just take out a cheap hosting package with WA, then use their smtp servers as they allow you to do this.
 
welll.... on my capped telkom account i can still access the smtp server

Someone is lying to one of us - see my mail to them above , they state they do not allow access to the smtp saix server on the saix local accounts - who did you speak to - we are getting two different stories - WA please comment on this - you are starting to look very unreliable with the info you are giving out.
