So I know I'm going to be crucified for daring to start a new topic on the subject but is the SAIX news server now officially blocked or something, as of the 1st August? I posted on the end of the usenet thread and got no response. Both me and my friend cannot log in to it using altbinz any more. IS still works.

It's not like other times when it just doesn't connect. Now it says connecting but just flashes on and off and never actually downloads anything. I know you'll tell me to buy uncapped or something and giganews but not everyone can afford it and we're happy to use our meagre little free 20 gigs for a few TV shows. So if any one has actual information on what the problem might be, please share it, otherwise don't tell me what fantastic alternatives you use, you'll just make me jealous! :D

It's working fine. Are you sure your settings are right? perhaps you're using a domain that no longer resolves to the correct IP.

Or perhaps you're using a non-SAIX ISP?

Switched

You have probably been switched from a SAIX account to a IS account, this has happened to me as of 1 August:

Your uncapped ADSL account xxxxxxxxxxx@afrihost
is unfortunately one of the 'high usage' accounts that's
been affected by our new Bandwidth Management
system we implemented in July.

Please read this email carefully to see what we've
done to improve your account's performance going
forward and what you need to do now to take
advantage of this.

How has this affected your account?

In July we changed the way we manage our Uncapped
clients - While we knew this way of managing our
bandwidth would give most of our clients a better
overall experience we also knew it would affect the
performance of our "highest usage" uncapped clients.

(In case you missed it I've included a copy of the
email I sent through in mid June explaining all this
in detail)

In the last 30 days you have moved 127.098 GB
and as such are one of our "highest usage" accounts.

This means that you are automatically subject to our
Bandwidth Manager system whenever our capacity is
stretched and thus your overall performance has been
- and unfortunately will continue to be - slower.

Nope it's telkom and should still be on SAIX, I have a normal account with them and then prepaid from afrihost for when that runs out so it's not being switched to IS. It still tries to connect to SAIX and comes up with the status bar but then stops without downloading anything and tries again. It worked on Saturday, now suddenly it's broken... :S

What is the correct server to use? I am using news.saix.net and news2, has this now changed?

Servers are correct. If I understand you correctly it does connect but doesn't download anything. You're maybe grabbing an NZB that's over 240 days old? (on saturday it was 239 days, now it's 240 days?)

"meagre little free 20 gigs" would imply it's a xxxxxxxxxx @2gbsh.telkomsa.net account btw. seeing as IS works it makes me think a non-SAIX acc is connected when trying to dl. coz a telkom account won't work on news.is.co.za

edit:/
darnit, i type too slow
anyhow; i didn't know there's a news2. and from what i can tell, the retention got lowered to 177 days

Try to refresh your grouplist if you using Grabit (very simple as i don't know the others) and see if that helps otherwise try a different client to see if that makes any kind of difference.

It may be SAIX but just try these suggestions :)

But it's weird because it comes up with the status bar like it's downloading but nothing happens. If it's unable to connect it normally just doesn't show anything. And the NZBs I've tried are various ages, all under 200 days. Maybe it's just a local area communication problem? Grabit and altbinz both don't work with SAIX but do on IS with my afrihost account. I'm in two minds though as to wether or not this is something one phones telkom about.
"Hi I'm busy downloading some stuff from the grey areas of legality and it doesn't seem to be working. Can you help??"

Set you connection timeout to longer than 30 seconds so it does not retry connect before it has started downloading.( This is mainly during business hours when low bandwidth is assigned to the news server) This is if the article is still available.

Downloading during the day or after 6Pm?

Trying to download right now, so after 6 pm. Grabit successfully retrieves the listings but doesn't download any articles.

The error message grabit gives is: alt.binaries.multimedia does not exist on this server

This is an exact video of what it's doing.
* Logged into 2gbsh.telkomsa.net account.
* Grabit gives the additional details that the group doesn't exist on the server.
* NZB in question is 11 days old. Can't beat classic cosby!

Maybe judgement day is coming on us all? :P

Am checking out that video, we are also getting enormous amounts of lag playing MW2, possibly related...we have no idea (SAIX went down day or 2 ago aswell).

Give it some time as its still early in the month :)

Also try enabling only 1 connection , i see u have about 4.

2 to the normal and 2 to news2 however they should resolve to the same IP.

someitmes 1 connection allows good speeds.

Ok I will check it out again in a few days, just noticed it was doing that after the switch over to the new month and thought it might be some new measure they've put in place. Thanks for the suggestions!

i'm also getting "article not found" when connecting from the 41.x.x.x range, im capped but only sometimes do i get the 165.x.x.x range and then it works.
something is borked!

Ahh so I'm not crazy! :-) Unfortunately my telkom IP only ever seems to be in the 41 range... :-(

ya ... its works 50% of the time.. then for 10 minutes says article not found.. then starts working 10 minutes later for 10 minutes

Well my friend phoned telkom and they said it was working fine from their side so it must be his computer. Even though it's not working on any computer or any of 4 completely different connections I've tried. Maybe it's only affecting certain areas?

Does any one know of telkom proxies that might work on altbinz or grabit? It has an option to put them in so I figure I can at least try that right?

Also does any one know if the uncapped offerings from mweb, afrihost, axxesss etc, shape port 119 or not?
