Saix news server

I am having the exact same issue. It's frustrating that only a few are having the issue. My IP is also in the 41 range. I have tried everything, different pc, alt.binz, gabit, newsbin pro. All do not work. HELP!!!

The problem is not with talking to the server, it seems to recognize that it's there and tries to connect but it just keeps going and not downloading anything. I phoned telkom and after being treated like an idiot they finally said the problem must be with SAIX, phone them. Did that and they said the problem is telkom. What gives!!?!?!

um, you guys do know about the hack that allows people to make 30 simultaneous connections to the server at the same time?

That's why it is always so slow... cos some guys are raping the crap out of it. Too bad.

Get a paid news server... see the link in my sig.

Hi Gary, the problem with the paid news servers is they use international bandwidth surely? Does afrihost or access uncapped shape that port or not?

When I used Giganews (international NZB server), Mweb actually shaped it too.

I'm quite curious as how one can make 30 connections to the SAIX server from a single account :D
I know that I can establish a couple of connections per SAIX IP that I have...

Currently I'm actually getting better speeds off the SAIX news server than I'm getting from Mweb's news server. This morning I barely got 1KB/s from the Mweb one, and now about 10kB/s avg, where as the SAIX one is maxing out my 384kbps line :)

Yes, but with the price of uncapped these days... there is no real reason to avoid the international servers.

Virtual machines with IPCop.
Ah OK. That's precisely what I thought of doing with my MikroTik router. You can do the same with Gatecrasher's DD-WRT script.

I don't see a point in establishing more than 2 connections. It's not as if you're going to get a faster download speed by opening a few more connections.
Perhaps if you're using Grabit it might be useful to have at least 1 connection per file that you're currently downloading, but Alt.Binz can only download 1 file at a time.

So, just to clarify, how much do uncapped providers shape the 119 usenet port?

OK so I have now tested on 4 different computers, 4 different connections, different versions of windows, 5 different telkomdsl accounts, different versions of alt binz and grabit. I even set up my outlook express to view the groups and it gave the list of all of the groups but couldn't read any posts. The error I got when trying to sync was "411 group does not exist", similar error as on grabit. Having multiple connections and so on is all fine and good but to do that the system has to at least be working! I'm getting fed up! There are some posts that are going to expire just now before I get to them. I would go over to uncapped account but my experience is that the SAIX server usually works better, probably because every one has gone over to IS now! haha!

So now that I am capped and trying to use the news servers I find the same problem, glad to find I wasn't the only one, joined just to post in this topic! I am getting lank fed up trying to get it sorted! Same error every time, group does not exist on this server or some such trash.

If you guys are having so much trouble and so desperate, then you should rather go and get yourselves premium Usenet server accounts instead - like garyvdh said.

Do any of you who are having trouble downloading content from the SAIX news server, have an account on www.nzbsa.za.net where you can check if the files are cached...?

I think Mweb is shaping it during office hours, although I have had a few times where I got my full line speed during office hours too. Mweb say that they're not shaping the traffic, but I find that hard to believe since my HTTP stuff are fine during office hours, where as I was 1 time limited to like 2kB/s with the NZB downloads.

Sorry perhaps I'm a total noob and don't understand anything about Grabit, Altbinz etc... but I am also capped on Telkom do2 account, so am on local now. I go to Newshost, download my nzb file to my pc, fire up SABnzbd, it picks up the nzb file and at the moment I'm downloading fine on my 384k line... so apologies again if I'm seriously missing the point of this discussion, but just wanted to say saix news server works fine for me lol. Getting +- 39KB/s and have been downloading all morning.

Yeah the point is it was working for me last month and now it's not! It's also not working for at least 4 other connections I've tried (all different PCs), and for some other people on this topic. It's fine to just say I should get an uncapped account and overseas usenet but I was forced to sign a contract with telkom because my old router died and I couldn't afford the outlay for a new one, and I can't just add another 300 rand to my internet bill. SAIX should be working and it's NOT, so I'm not getting the service I'm paying for, and others are. I mainly started this topic to see if it was now blocked or something but since it is working for other people, I now feel robbed! :-(

@pada: Some of the NZBs I've tried are new and popular so they should be cached, I usually use NZB matrix to grab them since I came late to the party and didn't get an invite code for the local sites.

I don't know about you guys but along with the news server not working, normal browsing speed is in a shocking state as well. To load google takes about 2 min on my pc. Surely this is a problem on telkoms side? For such "world class technology" they sure are back in the stone age when it comes to realizing they have a network problem.

I'm actually using NZBMatrix too. I've gone as far as writing a PHP/MySQL script to download the files for me while I'm asleep :D

It's a shame that you had to sign a contract with Telkom. Just remember that being with SAIX doesn't imply that you have the right to a working news server! Having a working news server is just an added bonus.

Do you even have trouble connecting to the SAIX news server late night / early morning: eg. 22:00 - 06:00?

I've left my Alt.Binz downloading for the past 3 days and it hasn't downloaded 100kb. if i pause all downloads and click connect, both news.saix.net connections stay connected. As soon as i click resume it says "downloading Article" for a split second and goes back to connecting for a split second.......and so it does that continuesly
