Saix rumour

Stoke, the 24 month contract is for the ADSL line, not the TelkomInternet (90% sure). So they can move.

Doekvoet, from what Telkom stated in their Press release about the Aug changes, it is quite clear that you will pay for the extra use. How that will be implemented? We will have to wait and see. Telkom did say that the current way of buying a extra account is not a good way of doing it. I think it will be similar to the free minutes of celphones. You pay per use for the extra per MB.

My speculation is that my car will remain the same colour in August and ...

The only thing that will change is everything will be capped after 3gig if you choose to go that route. There will be a business option that charges you for data used after your 3gig is up.

All the other ISP offerings will remain the same, except for international being dead when your cap is up.

So, we go backwards instead of forwards.

Sigh, I feel sad when people boast about their 10/20/30GB accounts, because we are all STILL being ripped off. Paying more for more is not the answer.

ER ...

30gig = 10x3gig accounts at Telkom prices = R2500, at Axxess prices = R579

the problem here is not the ISP charges, it's the Telkom line rentals !

I was talking about the axxess offering and was too lazy to check other ISPs prices so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and rounded it off to 500. :)

The fact is, even 300 is too much. Forking out most of your salary to pay for a connection? No thanks.

I'm aware that Telkom are the problem, but even though ISPs do what they can, for the average South African it's not enough.

I dunno - in context, I'd say 30gig of data for R500 all inclusive would not be too bad considering our current small market - ok, to make it more feasible, on a 1mb line.

If Telkom were to cap local as well once the cap is reached on all packages then they are FUBAR IMO! Telkom is just a bunch of nutters in management running a business that cannot but make money because it is a monopoly! They pat eachother on the back every now and again telling one another what great business people they are. But not one of those prats can actually run a business in a competative market...

PRATS!

it does occur to me that a perfect money making scheme would be for Telkom to simply pass the buck for watching downloads, to the customer. In other words - download whatever you like, but then we (Telkom) will hit you with the bill for it at the end of the month. Go over your cap if you like, but be ready for bills showing the extra gigs at telkom rates..
If I was terminally stupid, power mad, in charge of a company with no competition - that would be the route I'd take, to give the appearance of 'helping customers' - but actually racking up vast extra amounts of money for a few months.

might be important to consider that this pending announcement (capped local in Aug) only effects SAIX supplied ADSL accounts. IS, UUNET and two other ISPs are not affected at all. Now that SAIX are allowing connections into the ADSL access cloud more freely, me thinks you will see a lot more competition in the ISP space as the larger ones more to self provisioning...
