:) For more than two years now I've been sending a monthly email family newsletter to about 100 recipients from my home PC using SendBlaster (free edition).

 At the beginning of this month, and for the first time ever, my bulk email failed with the following error log:

Code:
220 ctb-mesg-2-1.saix.net ESMTP Postfix
EHLO icon.co.za
250-ctb-mesg-2-1.saix.net
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 102400000
250-ETRN
250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
250-8BITMIME
250 DSN
MAIL FROM: <[email protected]>
250 2.1.0 Ok
RCPT TO: <[email protected]>
554 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: Policy Rejection- 559 IP Dynamicly Blacklisted for 60 minutes, illegal HELO id.

Now when I called MWEB they didn't know what the error meant, but said I should call Telkom ADSL support. Telkom said its a SAIX issue and that I should call MWEB, who said I should call Telkom... No, no, no! I'm not keen on more laps - so they conceded and 'escalated' the problem to a completely unhelpful person, who said I should open an MWEB Business account where, for a fee I can send bulk email... It appears that SAIX policy is good for MWEB sales!

Clearly SAIX have implemented a new smtp policy, which effectively bans bulk email.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

Get your own hosting and email from there. R18 a month
Or use a free pop3 emailer

Thanx Synergy - I'll investigate. Still think it sux that SAIX/MWEB/Whoever can REDUCE your offer and a) not tell you, and b) not charge you less...

AS IF?!

Hi Potion

Yours is not only a bulk e-mail problem, we have been sitting with it for about 2 months now.

Got around it in the past by using a different mail account for sending which would work for a while. However today I have been unable to send any e-mails at all.

Any answers will be great.

I'm afraid that both SAIX and MWEB are suffering from either arrogance or incompetence or (most likely) both. I figured that I would have to get my own SMTP server, and so I eventually set up a business account (NOT with MWEB), which for R50 a month gives me: 1) my own domain; 2) web site; 3) mail service including SMTP, POP and Webmail; 4) lots of pre-installed web applications; etc, etc...

They also offer ADSL internet access at a substantially lower cost than MWEB, and their level of technical support, in both attitude and aptitude, leaves MWEB in the dunce corner. And since I own the domain, if their service levels or cost competitiveness is no longer acceptable, I can move it to another hosting service without losing my email or web host addresses.

The only thing keeping me connected through MWEB is my 13-year-old original Icon email address. But my sentimental attachment to it has now waned, and in a month or two it'll be no more. R.I.P. MWEB

Have you tried mailing direct from say, Gmail?
Setting up all the addresses and then sending via that (or in BCC)

I do that for my mailing that I sent out and it's fine.
I sometimes get blacklisted from a certain place but generally can contact them and fix it.

I am using Microsoft Outlook and have 3 e-mail accounts.
Initially I would get the Helo ID error, then simply change my sending account and the mail would go through immediately.

Now, though I am getting the error on all 3 accounts.

Same here - got tired of their high costs, and terminated it.

Thank goodness for google mail :D

Your own domain and email server will work better than trying to [-]spam[/-]mail through SAIX or Mweb :)

Just keep in mind that, should you decide to host it yourself, you'll need a static IP.

There's lots of cheap sites which will allow you to host your own domain and email server(s) for a cheap fee overseas than locally.

Just this very minute checked all3 mail accounts and test messages went through with no problem.

I guess what I am trying to establish whether the problem is Telkom's or Outlook's or Global?

Renewing an old thread...

No SMTP server in the world would solve the problem.
The ISP assigned IP address is the issue here. It all boils down to the way you are connected to the internet.
The only way around the dreaded "policy rejection - 559", apart from a bulk mailer, is to have a dedicated IP which is not shared by millions of other users.
It is not the full IP that gets blacklisted, but only the first 2 groups, eg. 196.41.xxx.xxx, affecting all the users in that range.
Agree that Telscum and MWeb are the two most affected ISPs with this problem, with @lantic now also joining the ranks.
The more users on an ISP, the bigger the problem becomes - all part of the standards set way back when... Some reading regarding mail standards.

Are you sure about that? Have you found out whether the ISP allows you to relay from the DSL range on *their* SMTP relay servers (instead of through SAIX)?

The more users on an ISP, the bigger the problem becomes

The more trojaned machines behind a relay server, the more restrictions have to be put in place to avoid the relay being blacklisted, and *all* customers affected (their mail being rejected at the destination). The ISP relay policy may be more tolerant when you satisfy some checks that lower the probability of your mail being SPAM.
