SAIX vs IS - cheaper does not always mean its better

This is actually quite hilarious.

IS and SAIX goes as follows:
IS is good for absolutely everything except for uncached items on their news server (where content is cached for a few hours/ day or two after the last grab). IS is still slower than SAIX for the rest of the news server, but taking the right measures makes it just as fast on cached items.
SAIX is good for everything, but costs a heck of a lot more.

i just bought 10GB SAIX and its also trickling, is something screwed ...seems my SAIX and IS is *** slow

oh wait a sec, there we go, somoene just switched on the internet :) Its going again

Everything Super smooth on the SAIX side of things, just one IRRITATING problem, ever since they upgraded our dsl from 384 to 4mb, my adsl resets every time someone phones me...any suggestions? swapped them with new filters but still no luck. Never had that problem with my 384.

Hmmm, I get full speed (420 kbps+) from the International News Servers on my uncapped IS, so I tend to think the problem is not with IS, but with the local IS news server. I'm very happy with my uncapped IS.

both my is (semi) and saix are acting normal 4meg.

Well that is what he bought.... a 30GB IS account- local. The intl news servers run fine on both IS and SAIX for obvious reasons. It's the IS news server that's the issue.

actually the newserver is fine; there are just too many monkeys grabbing bananas ;)

would be nice if and when that ever happenns, to have a local pay server which is actually onpar with for example giganews or newshost and not just wow we mirror giganews...

Congestion has never been a problem on the IS news server. The problem is that the cache is too small, and IS have deliberately throttled the speed on uncached articles to sub 1kbps per connection - rendering it virtually unusable. They may think they are saving money, but ultimately they are losing customers.

Ja, but wholesale bandwidth prices will have to come down before that is ever a possibility. Right now it is just not feasible for a private entity to take on such a huge capital cost. the bandwidth will be the biggest cost. Giganews investigated this last year and reported back that it was not feasible.

Actually it is very possible. IS have bought some large space on Seacom, they have an IECNS licence. They could become a provider of note. We don't know what Telkom's plans are. The only problem for IS is access to the LL.

Is does not even have a decent network (backhual & infrastructure), nevermind LLU. Those that have used any ISP via IS should no this by now.

that's what interconnect agreements and companies like Dark Fibre are for. And in this day and age all IS need to take Telkom on is a big fat internet pipe... and they are gonna have one of those in 23 days time.
