Can these stupid kids not find anything constructive to do with their time than ruin a local gaming site?

I hope the admins follow up on this and do something about it..

magneto, would you keep the same webserver running directly after a defacement without investigating it first? ;)

And, the previous "hack" details can be found here (03/20/2005):

<rant>

I've always tried to understand the idea behind website defacements. What they try to achieve, what they try to prove.

I tried to find out some more information about these so called hackers that defaced the site, and it lead me to websites who's languages are well... I have no idea what damn languages they're using. So what was this? Certainly not a directed attack. If not a directed attack, then why the hell? I believe these attacks are a mixture of a kiddy who found a new exploit script, and rebel without a clue. Just searching for websites to "hack", to try prove whatever superiority they think they have.

i would get the webserver back up running straight away and start investigating...

not leave the server down for hours...

Something about restarting an already bugged httpd that was hacked, before patching / problem solving... scares me. But, to each their own. :)

I hope they do telkom.co.za next!
That would be funny.. but doing in the gaming site isn't funny at all.. they put a lot of effort into what they do and to see a handful of laaities deface the site is pretty much infuriating

Whooooa!

Naughty naughty! Rebels without a cause... what is this world coming to...

A hacking contest slated for this weekend could produce a rash of Web-site defacements worldwide, according to a warning issued Wednesday by security companies and government Internet security groups.

The hacker defacement contest is expected to kick off on Sunday. The contest supposedly will award free hosting services, Web mail, unlimited E-mail forwarding, and a domain name of choice for the triumphant hackers, according to a Web site promoting the contest.

Web-site defacement points will be awarded based on the type of operating system running the Web site. Defacement of Web sites running Windows will only win a single point, while sites running Linux, Unix, and BSD are each worth three points. Sites running AIX, IBM's version of Unix, are worth three points, while sites running HP-UX, Hewlett-Packard's version of Unix, and Apple's Macintosh computers are worth up to five points, according to the contest Web site.

Internet Security Systems Inc., which operates a cyberthreat early-warning network called the Information Technology Information Sharing and Analysis Center, is urging Web-site administrators to review their Web-site security before they head home for the holiday weekend. ISS's X-Force research group says they've received credible information that hacker groups are scanning Web sites to discover vulnerable systems. But X-Force doesn't expect any major activity until Sunday.

While there's been a recent increase in Web-site scanning activity, there's also been a noticeable decrease in Web-site defacements, says Chris Rouland, director of ISS X-Force. "The hackers are sandbagging," he says. "We've seen this before. Hackers will break in before the event and conduct the actual defacement during the contest."

The exact time the contest will start is not yet known, but the contest rules say it will be limited to six hours. X-Force is trying to determine whether the contest is being run by hacking groups from Brazil or Hong Kong, both known for active Web-defacing activity.

The contest also may be a recruiting effort, Rouland says. "This is one way to learn who are the best defacers out there" and to find out which hackers have figured out new ways to break in and deface sites, he says.

Lets hope they do something to telkom.co.za

They did that on November 1, 2005 and we are still suffering.

Hackers are as evil as Telkom.

"free hosting services, Web mail, unlimited E-mail forwarding, and a domain name of choice " - Total cost: $10... morons.

Or if they are so good hackers why not just host on their own internet connection. Not that u need to be a good hacker but just saying that a good hacker will know how to host a site on his own machine and internet connection

Agreed. Telkom's gaming effort is something the rest of Telkom can actually look at for inspiration. As with anything it could be better, but it is something many of us find VERY useful.

I can't believe these noobs would hack a free gaming service. Can't they at least target some useless governement websites (Oh wait, I forgot that's been done before. LOL). But seriously, surely these people would leave a website alone if it's a free service and it's to do with something enjoyable (ie. gaming).

I wonder why they put "(Turkish&Muslim)" on the defacement notice. Why would they want their crimes to be associated with a religion? Do they actaully want people to feel contempt towards Muslims. These are the kind of people who give an otherwise peaceful community a bad name.

pity they didn't take it all down.

want to see elyzium crying like a baby.
Why the hell would you want that? How would you like it if you put work into a free service and some guy stuffed it up for no reason. Now he's got even more work to do to fix it.
