I am new to the forum, but I find this topic to be very interesting. I was an academic for 7 years. When I left at the end of last year my total package was +-260000 with a take home of approx 13K pm.
It is not always as easy as teaching for 3 days and then playing golf for 2 days. You are expected to do all your own admin and record keeping, you have to do research, teach your classes, do marking and setting of tests and so on. You also have to deal with the some of the most annoying people that sit in your classes expecting no to do any work for themselves. Also moving forward academics are expected to publish a certian number of papers per year depending on your rank. There are also no automatic promotions and if you don't meet the criteria to apply for a higher level your salry maxes out till you meet the requirements.
Finally, there are no perks as one would get out in the real world or most academics - nor car allowances, cell phone allowances, etc.
