outside your window.. no really.. keep looking...
i was thinking about adding a salary track to devscore. basically you log in and you can enter your salary and compare your self to others.

so i could log in and say I'm a dev in kzn I work with c# asp.net mvc i have 5 years xp and i earn x total cost to company.

then you can compare yourself to the average ctc of all devs with 5 years xp or all devs with c# or even devs in php etc.

my question is would you be comfortable giving exact figures or would you want to select a range.

for averaging etc i would prefer you to enter exact figures. but i understand it does make people feel uncomfortable.

obviously your exact figures will never be known to the public and im not linking it to your place of work so it will never be shown or come back on you.

its just that the exact figures are there in the db. but my thinking is even if i really do go into the db and look up your username or email and then join and find out your salary.. er what then. its not like i can do anything with this information.

As long as no one has direct access to the figures and it can't be obviously linked to a users account by website users. it should be fine.
Many people have already posted their job type and monthly salaries on this forum.

Think it would be a valuable and interesting tool. With enough historic data maybe MyBB will send you a hoodie for your data :P

There is already a similar site called payscale.com if I remember correctly. Lots of useful stats, although I have a feeling that many of them are out of date. The problem is that I think payscale does not take into account the high rate of South African inflation.

The other problem is that your data is only as good as the number of people that respond.

How do you plan to keep the rates current ? What with inflation and all, I would imagine that after a time the rates are out of date. Means you need to have a strategy for getting people to update their data. Can be a challenge that.

What i was thinking is kind of make it a time line. In year 2010 I had x years experience with these technologies and i was earning y.

assuming you're entering every year I could show you the average curve for your tech and see if you're above or below

I also want to have a few questions so if you're a contractor you can say in year 2010 with x years experience I was charging y per hour.

The best thing to do with systems like these is to sort of make the years you entered in available for you to get data out. The downside is this does encourage *******s to be *******s and enter **** data

Yeah, i don't see anyone coming to a website to keep it up to date. I definitely wouldn't bother.

Would be better if it was anonymous, rather than requiring a logon...

Mike Hoxbig I can see anonymity is a big factor with you and I don't blame you Mike Hoxbig. My only problem is that then I need captcha or some other spam prevention Mike. Rest assured that when it came to something like this your data would be protected and only used in providing averages. The only person who could possibly see your actual figures would be me i guess and I really am not that interested in writing that much sql Mike.

But yeah if enough people wanted it completely anonymous and really love captchas it could definitely be on the cards.

Yeah Mike what is your problem Mike?

Anyway, how else do we go about it if we want averages? I am fine if sp4ceman sees it prolly but a bit scared that others might get this info...

The benefit of anonymity also allows you to optionally post the name of the company, so that people have an idea of the range that a particular company pays, and whether it is indeed "market related" as they claim.
