Samsung 40inch vs Sinotec 42inch

Hi there, i just wanted to know the quality of Sinotec TV's im torn about which TV to buy, i refuse to get the Sinotec if there is going to be a noticeable difference in display quality when watching dvd's / tv. Im not interested in Blue Ray dvds or HD tv or gaming so that is not a concern but I want the one with visibly better quality, but they're both pretty much the same apart from the different manufacturers. Id rather go fo the cheaper one if there's no difference other than the name.

At the risk of sounding like PostmanPot, get a plasma.
 
We had a Sinotec 42" LCD and recently replaced it with that very Samsung 40 inch. The difference is huge, especially in contrast (black level) and colour saturation. The Sinotec was backlit by fluorescent, not LED -- which was part of the problem. So I don't know how the two LEDs would compare and obviously you'll need to look at them side by side.

The Sinotec eventually failed in two ways -- the backlight went dark in one corner, and power went bad making startup take forever. I think their electronics and build quality are likely to be worse than Samsung's. That 5 year guarantee is a good deal. Just don't expect the Sinotec to be working in year 6. Although LED is a different kettle of fish lifetime wise, what matters is how they drive those LEDs.
 
I have no idea i was actually just hoping id run into someone whose watched off a Sinotec and Samsung but the odds of that are pretty pathetic. I know next to nothing about technololgy i just want the best picture quality i can get for what im willing to pay. I know LCD is a step down from LED but is it really a noticeable difference? If not id even settle for an LCD but from what iv read LED seems like it would have a far better picture quality. My heart was set on Samsung but iv also read that Sinotec's quality is just as good if you're just using it to watch tv and movies and nothing else.
 
Wow THANKS Tomtomtom - thats a big help. Was worried about comparing them in store as it all depends on how they are set up and if they're playing off a dvd or dstv but i will ask them to set them up identical and take a look myself but i think im still set on the Samsung, just feels safer to go with a well known brand. You have to look at them in the shop. LED-backlit is not guaranteed to be better than "non-LED" (CCFL-backlit) LCD. There's a lot of other things that go into making a good screen. Samsung is generally better but the Sinotec price and guarantee are important. If they look basically the same in store, I might the Sinotec. If Samsung has any edge at all in picture, sound or looks, I'd go with that.

By the way, the Samsung only has one HDMI input and one component/composite, which might be a problem. You won't be able to plug two component or composite devices in together, i.e. an SD decoder plus an older DVD player will not work! One of your two devices has to have HDMI out. So an HD PVR plus DVD player will work.

My Sinotec is still running after many, many Years. ZERO problems. its one of their older models though, im not sure about the new ones.

Samsung might have more blacks and whatnot, specwise its probably better - but when I watch the Transformers 3 or Avatar Extended blurays, I'm not complaining - looks perfect to me.


Having said that, it's probably better to get the Samsung between the two....and having said that, I would go for a Plasma as rorz0r said.

You shouldn't be considering LED-LCD / CCFL-LCD TVs when your purposes suit plasma.

Get a 43" plasma Samsung PS43D450 R4,999 or 51" plasma Samsung PS51D450 R5,999+.

Both techs have their merits. Plasma gets recommended when it is most suited (more often), and LCD gets recommended when it is most suited (like when FHD is a requirement on a budget).

Not entirely sure what you mean, when I am simply giving my time to help people get what's best for them.

As an owner of both Series 4 plasma and Series 5 LCD, I think these are more appropriate:

Postman "Value for Money" Pot
Postman "Picture Quality" Pot
Postman "Sport and SD TV" Pot
Postman "HD/DVD Rip" Pot
Postman "Far Viewing Distances Negate 1080p" Pot

Wait, plasma is the best at all of the above...

Would stay with a known brand when paying that prices.
My Samsung have never given me any problems, and the picture is clear.

Something to consider when buying a screen. How does it look like when you watch at an angle. At the shops they always get you right in front of the TV. But at home, not everyone sits right in front of the TV. If like my place, I sometimes stand in the kitchen and watch the TV in the living room.

Good point. Shops are horrible for judging TVs because of viewing angles as you say, incredibly bright shop lighting, and incorrect (close) viewing distances.

Best to go to a AV shop with a proper test/dark room.

Panel quality and image processors will always be superior on branded sets.

Most people would not be able to tell a difference when playing HD sources on a cheapie/branded set...

More often than not they seem inferior - poorer colours, poorer light bleed/spots...

But don't argue with anyone as to what looks best in Makro!!!
