Samsung 40inch vs Sinotec 42inch

More often than not they seem inferior - poorer colours, poorer light bleed/spots...

But don't argue with anyone as to what looks best in Makro!!!

Their main advantage IMO is the (theoretically) longer life, because there's no filament or high-voltage ballast.

Moot point IMO, even plasmas are being rated at ±200,000 hours before half life, so historically CCFL LCD will be more.

The TV will be replaced long before one makes use of LED back-lighting's theoretical longer lifespan.

You shouldn't be considering LED-LCD / CCFL-LCD TVs when your purposes suit plasma.

Get a 43" plasma Samsung PS43D450 R4,999 or 51" plasma Samsung PS51D450 R5,999+.

I know you are the dude to ask this....

Can I get Plasma in less than 40" ? My viewing distance is less than 2m... also will my wii look good on a plasma ?

Fair enough, but possibly at higher resale value?

Not without importing, and even then they're scarce I believe.

You'd have to settle with a 42/43". Dimensions here - http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/co...dex.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification.

I'm not entirely sure what Wii's resolution is, but I think it can be 480p or 576i (interlaced).

Both or these are lower resolutions (standard definition/SD/non-HD, I believe), so it suits HD Ready plasma more than FHD LCD.

The beauty of 42/43" HD Ready plasma is that the resolution is 1024x768 (a 4:3 resolution which suits lower resolution video/SD), but it maintains 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio because it uses rectangular pixels. So you get the best of both worlds when displaying either SD or HD content. :)

In all honestly though, Wii is just fine on 40"/46" FHD. A 40" LCD will cost about 10 - 20% more though for 2/3" smaller. ;)

Ye, that's what I was thinking... wii supports 576i wide.

I suppose I'll just have to check and see what the 42 looks like up close.

My FIL has a 50" LCD with the same viewing distance and its horrible to watch. Its a great set but if you are too close it makes you sick.

Also I need 4 HDMI ports, composite and RCA...

Too close and you will experience the "plasma fuzz". LCDs appear "crisper" up close.

±2m should be fine though.

HDMI splitters are cheap.

I got a FHD 42" Sinotec. Not worth it. Blurs with the PS3 and football also sucks. Rather go for quality.

Your chances of Sinotech failing on the backlit is much bigger than the Samsung. For that reason alone i would get the Samsung tv instead. I went to game once and saw the demo model sinotech tv and the backlit was 40% damaged and i thought by myself with this demo model they will never sell any of these...
Why do you want to get a good quality TV and only be interested in dvds and no blu ray or High definition content? Rather get a CRT then :)

Well depends the viewing distance. For 40 inch 5 to 8ft is the optimum where 42 is 5 and a half to 8 and a half. So have a look where your Tv will be standing and where you will be sitting and measure the distance that will tell you the size you need.

Plasma and LCD the age old argument. Why do people go for plasma and some for LCD and where will each look good at. That's also simple if you have ample lightning conditions then a LCD will be better. Note if I say LCD I mean led etc.

If you got a dark room or living room or wherever the TV is going to be then a Plasma will be the better choice. Also they can easily cost two or more times per inch than an equivalent DLP But their prices are dropping I must add.

Now getting back to you two choices. Ok 99.99 percent of LCDs that comes in 40 inch and above got a 1080p resolution. Thats blueray content. I take it you got a blueray player otherwise it will be a waste.
LCDs doing upscaling is fine but as soon as its needs to downscale it drops of pixels and colours to do that by guessing. So you don't get the image quality you paid for. So do yourself a favour and get yourself hd and blueray content. Must of them comes with built in tuners which mean you download hd content over the air with it without leaving your living room.

Now both got the same resolution so its still hard to differentiate between the two by looking at the specs. But you want the one with best picture quality cause your paying a your hard earned pennies for it.

Its easy to spot which one got a better picture quality. Contrast ratio is the most important aspect after resolution which will tell you the image quality of the LCD.

Now the Samsung got a contrast ratio of 3000:1 compared to the other one which is 4000:1 . I can tell you know both those contrast ratios are bog wash. Unfortunately they lie. Contrast ratio needs to be done by your eyes and not be according to specs. So if you can have a look at both of them do so.

Then if you look at the manufacturers. Samsung vs Sinotec? Samsung know why they make their LCD 40 inch because from 42 inch we are starting to get into plasma territory. So Sinotec tried to lure the people with the bigger screen size and they so gladly advertised their contrast ratio of 4000:1 as one of their selling points. Samsung normally don't do that. In real life youll be seeing a contrast ratio between 400 to 800:1.
To reach a conclusion go for the Samsung. They make their own panels and their lifespan will be better than Sinotec. If you google around youll notice people complaining about the colours and difference things going wrong with that LCD.

Hope this helps a bit. Just remember to judge with your own eyes and don't let the sales person influence you.

It's "claimed by some" that modern LCD power consumption is less than plasma.
Also "claimed by some" that modern plasma still suffers from bur-in and reflection.
Also "claimed by some" that fast motion on plasma is better than LCD

At the end of the day I doubt that it makes much difference to the average user.

:-)

Disagree with the "reasons" listed. Those aren't claims at all, sound like fact to me.

Agree with the reason being is because the average user is not anal/pedantic/concern for detail/etc. enough to care. Especially since all techs are +- on par.

Plasma is good when you have a dark room or tv room or whatever. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but plasma do have higher contrast ratios and you get them from 42 inch and upwards.
LCD is good for ample light conditions. Crap comparisons I've seen is that you can't use a plasma in airplanes as it doesn't do good on that high altitude lol
That sort of crap they use as advantages and disadvantages for it.

Here's a pic of a real LED display....

However, when somebody says LED TV in these forums, with current marketing, its safe to assume they want a LED back/edge lit Display, and not the above :p (but I guess for arguments and noobs sake, we can keep on with the noob bashing :p)
