GPS should be off. Unless it's in use.
I usually keep wifi off till I get home. Also I rooted & froze Google maps (it used a fair chunk of battery with my Note 1, even when you're not using it)

I get to about 60% charge left after work.....

You guys have got something wrong with your phones.
I have EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING on 24/7. I switch off nothing to conserve battery. And Google Now is top of my list. I use it and it must stay on.
I won't list what I have on, because nothing is off :)

Phone off charge around 06H15. I do some forum catch up when I wake up and check the tech news sites. On the way to school my son plays games on it. I may receive one or 2 calls. At periodic times during the day I check the forums while waiting for builds to complete.
I get home at 16H00 with around 70 to 75% left.
I use my phone quite a bit at home in the evening for surfing the web, tech sites and forums. When I dock it again at midnight when I go to sleep it is around 50 to 55%.

Based on my patterns with everything switched on, I can see around 2 full days from my phone.

Sounds like a faulty battery to me. No way you should be getting half a day with moderate use. You should get about 10 hours watching HD video alone. With a whole day messing around and using wifi, 3G, screen very bright i have naver managed to go below 30% for a day.

I get *** battery life on my phone.
I have most of the things turned off.
Phone set to GSM only.
GPS off
Wifi off.

My phone has been on battery for 17hours and its at 48%. This is with ONLY 44m screen on time.

ok thanks for replies. i removed it from charge this morning, currently at 20%.

gps is off, wifi off. i've only used it for about 1hour., rest off the day it was "idling"

how can i test to be 100% sure the battery is the problem?

Install GSAM Battery monitor.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm&hl=en

Let your phone run for an hour or so then go check out the app and see what is using the battery.
You can filter it down by which app is using the most battery or the most CPU.

Here i can see that Chrome and Polaris viewer have been active while i was not using them.
And if i open each one i can see that for some reason the sensors (Gyroscope and Magnet Field) have been active for 50 minutes for each app :-/.

EDIT: Seems like for most of my apps the sensors are not turning off after i close them

Wow, ok mine is not that bad. Do you have your phone on GSM only or is it set to Auto?

EDIT: 2012-12-03-14-47-48.jpg Here is mine.

If you have a look in the S3 thread you will find quite a few posts from me regarding very very very poor battery life on my S3.
I tried EVERYTHING. Eventually I got a new battery as I was certain it had to be battery. Problem persisted.

I went as far as keeping my phone in flight mode only and screen off. IE: It was on, but doing bugger all. Still drained battery.

I eventually just RMA'd the thing. Problem sorted.

Just another option to look at.

Quick update:
Reset my phone back to factory settings.
It has been on battery for 8 hours now. 17 minutes screen on time and its sitting at 95% battery.

Still getting the gallery using the Gyroscope every few seconds for some reason :-/.

removed the phone from charge at 6am, currently at 70% battery left.

30% battery lost in 9hours, while doing absolutely nothing on phone.

does this qualify as a mulfunctioning unit?

Mine drains at around 3.1% per hour with everything switched on.
I would say yours is reasonable if you have all radios and functions operational.
