Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Got a notification from "Samsung Push Service" that "New version available. Install now?".

Would that be a firmware update? On mobile data at the moment so can't do it.

Anyone got a change list?

Slightly off-topic, but which contract service would you guys recommend to go with the Note 2? I'm looking to upgrade and move away from Vodacon and so far Cell-C's Straight Up 100 service seems the most appealing, though I make more international calls than local and I'm not too keen on the 99c per MB OOB rate. How much data would an average user consume each month?

As soon as I get mine, I'll be using it on my Red Bull Mobile 200 contract. R249 a month for 200 anytime minutes, 100 sms's and 500MB data. I'll be honest with you, in terms of service they're not the greatest but which mobile provider can make that claim? I've used them all over the years and service is equally poor. I think the RBM 200 contract is very likely the best value for money, low-cost contract in SA (but stand to be corrected).

Hey people,

I should be getting my Note 2 on Wednesday...is one still supposed to charge your phone for a certain amount of time, for the first time? Can one use the phone in that time?

Probably a noobish question...

I don't believe it matters anymore. Battery was flat anyway.

No need to follow the instructions from staff at the stores. Modern batteries only needs to be charged until full. No use in keeping your phone on the charger once it's fully charged.

You can use youre phone straight away until the battery runs flat or while on the charger.

Thanks...when getting such an awesome piece of hardware I retrace all my steps to make damn sure I don't make some mistake...

I ordered my Note 2 from FNB on the 4th December and still no delivery. I've been bugging them a bit, but the stock response is 10-15 working days bla bla bla. I can't take it anymore :(

That sucks.

I also ordered mine from Autopage on 4 December. The whole of Autopage RSA has no stock, still. I have been prodding them like crazy...they probably think of me as that 'crazy white Galaxy Note 2 guy' by now. I don't care.

The prognosis is that I'll have to wait another week :(

I wonder how long it will take for the official 4.1.2 update. I have always rooted my devices but I'm probably going to keep this one stock.

I have a Vodacom device and were glad to find that it's not branded like my S3 were.

Samsung's JB Rom's (Touchwiz Nature UX or whatever) are really good IMO. No real need to try another ROM at this stage...unless maybe, if it is a Samsung based ROM

Stock is low and so you have to place an order if you want it... so I placed an order but due to the holidays I will only get mine the 28th December :D.... I spoke to the sales person at vodashop and he said that the LTE version is coming around the end of the first week of the new year according to the report vodacom sends them of new arrivals and its almost a R1000 more then the 3G version. Almost R1000 more just for better data speeds :wtf:

Are any of you aware of the Exynos security flaw in the Note 2 (and some other Samsung devices - Note, S3) ? Chainfire over at XDA Forums has a tool for it.

It seems the part of the Kernel used for the front facing camera allows for unrestricted access to the device. Thus allowing you to root it with a simple APK package. But the downfall of the flaw is that you are wide open to any intrusions by infected APK's (malicious code)... The link supplied can close this "flaw" but essentially it is the same as "rooting" your device which will void your warranty. At present there is no official word from Samsung on the matter, nor an official fix.

Thanks! Very good to know...

Got my Note 2, b*tch*s!

Don't really mean to swear, I just feel like a real badass now :p

Just moving all my NB files and Titanium Backup files over from my S2...then going to root.

Not true:

Official Statement by Samsung:-
Samsung is aware of the potential security issue related to the Exynos processor and plans to provide a software update to address it as quickly as possible.
The issue may arise only when a malicious application is operated on the affected devices; however, this does not affect most devices operating credible and authenticated applications.
Samsung will continue to closely monitor the situation until the software fix has been made available to all affected mobile devices.
