Besides the Nexus 10 and the note range, Samsung have largely put themselfves out of the market with overpriced underspeced tablets. Hopefully this is the start of something new as tablets from Sony and other vendors are pushing boundries early this year already.

Fallacious? Samsung's track record when it comes to this sort of thing is there for everyone to see.

Inspired by the Nexus 7... Please cut the crap. The 7 and 8 inch form factor are completely different and throwing the Nexus 7 spanner in the works is absurd when one considers the company is known for this sort of thing.

Anyway, I will remove myself from this now. I am no devout Apple user but I'm not going to stick my head in the sand and pretend that the world around me is not what it is.

It might be what people want to read but real news isn't about what people want to read only. Stories about what people want to hear are about readership. Not compelling issues.

It is about what is compelling. If you publish only what people want to read you will not come up with compelling news. Real news is what is actually happening that is of significance, what will shake up the market, what will change the course of history. People will not know unless if they are told. It is a travesty if people are kept away from the truth because they do not know it or because they do not want to hear it.

Inconvenient truths are what change this world for the better. They are what brings forward movement in both fair and unfair societies. Not stories about the status quo.

Dead serious. They already have a Galaxy 7... Why on earth would they introduce a tablet only 1' bigger?

Samsung's venture into the consumer electronics industry is littered with this sort of thing. It's asinine denying it.

This is not to say they don't deserve their place alongside Apple at the top of the food chain.

1. Maybe the 10" is just too big, and the 8" is just to small?
2. There is a very big difference between the Note class tablets, and the Galaxy 7 - at least for the people looking for the stylus. And personally I was looking for exactly this in December. Wanted the Note functionality, but I don't want to carry around another book (10" tablet) and the Note II 'phablet' is too small.

So, why on earth would they introduce a 1" bigger tablet in the Note class... because their are consumers like me who like the choice and have very specific needs - something in line to what Android gives us above iOS!

IMO the iPad Mini was a response to the Samsung 7.7, which has been around for a while.

Poor response at that, screens do not even compare, Samsung is much better. I would take a Samsung 7.7" over an iPad Mini any day.

The only reason why the SGT 7.7" did not do very well is because Apple tied it up in legal knots, most of which have now been rescinded by courts around the world.

In the meantime, however, times have moved on and the SGT 7.7" is now a bit long in the tooth, and needs a revamp.

Maybe that is what the 8" is, just a replacement for the rather old 7.7", and almost exactly the same size.

Edit : The Samsung 7.7" is also a phone, so will be very similar to a Note 8"

Firstly we all know that samsung is the company that popularized the note territory with a 5.3 inch screen and the natural progression that they follow led them to create the note 2 with a slightly bigger screen i.e 5.5 inches.
Also the s1 came out with a 4 inch screen and the s2 with a 4,3 inch screen and the s3 with a 4,8 inch screen.

SEE THE PATTERN YET?good.... now how hard is it to then deduce the 8 inch tablet is a natural samsung progression from the 7.7 inch tablet they launched a year ago when ipad mini was just an idea?

Its a natural progression of samsungs design ideas so where you imagined this copying idea is beyond rational thinking and frankly reeks of fanboism.

Exactly.I hope it uses the same amoled screen because frankly that would be just amazing.Just hoping they give it some decent resolution and a decent cpu.

But in any event the tablet size thats got me is 10.1 so really looking forward to Sony's xperia z,10.1 inch tablet with a 6.9mm thickness and weight of 485 grams sounds awesome and non of that galaxy tab 10.1 low res screen stuff,it has a proper hd screen which at tablet viewing distances is great.

I loved the ipad 3 hardware just a pity the software let me down so i got rid of it and now i'm battling with a galaxy tab 10.1 with low res display for now.Pixels are easily noticeable unfortunately.Also the CPU/GPU combo cant handle hd movies very well.Samsung tabs have been somewhat disappointing to me and in general Apple puts them to shame in the tablet hardware arena.

Take Note Hush9300 that this is a Samsung NOTE. A NOTE series device is equipped with a stylus that differentiates it from their other devices. That a Note in size between the Note 2 and Note 10.1 would be forthcoming is natural considering how Samsung has done it in their non-stylus tablet lines. Samsung has been doing smaller tablets long before Apple. Apple is the one responding. An 8" Note tablet with stylus does not = iPad Mini.

I have an iPad 1, 2, 4 and iPad Mini just before you accuse me of being anti-Apple.

Their whole S line was built off the success of the original model which was as close to an iPhone clone as you could get. Hell even the first Galaxy Tab 10.1 was a first gen iPad clone.

With their latest lines they've started to shift away from the iDevices look.

There will be a difference between 7" and 8" , latter being a note and 7" a normal Tablet without an S-pen.

Great thats,better for us we wouldn't want a situation like the tv market where they all basically look the same....although I haven't heard anyone complaining about any one else copying each others designs when it comes to lcd tv's,its seem to be an ifan complex only.

It was in my experience with my own ipads(2 and 3).They had their charm initially but getting boring nowadays and the restrictions really are disappointing.

Some idevices like the ipad3/4 have a leg up on the main rivals like galaxy tab 10.1 since they definitely have a better screen and cpu/gpu and built quality in my personal day to day experience with them.....i would not say the same for their phones though the iphone 4s had looks and built quality as advantages to the s3 but screen wise the s3 puts even the iphone 5 to shame easily.The htc One x blows both of them out the water when it comes to screen quality though.

The iPad4 is much newer than the SGT 10.1, so that is not a fair comparison.

Better to compare the iPad4 with the Asus TF700T, Sony Tablet Z and Nexus 10.

BTW I prefer my TF700T to my iPad4, I hardly use the iPad4, it is just too limited. My TF700T has a great clip-on keyboard, and when I have the keyboard it has longer battery life, a total of 256GB of memory, and an HDMI output without an adapter.

Yes, Apple entered into the smaller tablet segment with the iPad Mini only recently but it is with a unique take on the market and a quite easily discernible form factor. It is one thing entering a segment and another to completely ripoff designs.

Your whole argument is based on a; "so what? I don't care attitude." So much so that you conveniently ignore that the Samsung Note line has become their premier product and them entering the line into what Apple have just recently released is basically reactionary. To make matters worse their 7, 7.7 and 8.9 tablets were monumental failures in the grand scheme of things.

Anyway, I've had experiences with Android phones (I've previously owned a S2 which was replaced twice) and I have played around with a family members Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the experience was horrible. It lags often enough to put me off (My PlayBook has a smoother UI), the apps look like they've been stuck together by a homeless Chinese fellow. The Android messaging interface stinks as well... So yes, the iOS software is miles ahead of them in both look and feel.

As far as the iOS ecosystem being eons ahead of the rest... Well, you happily throw around the term delusional quite casually when a visit to the mirror is quite possibly the best tonic for you. Do you really think that oversized phone apps on a tablet are competition to nearly 300,000 tablet specific apps? And you call me out as an iSheep. Come on man b

As for the display, size aside... The iPhone 5 is better than the S3 in terms of quality. There is a reason DisplayMate named it the best screen they've tested around the time of the iPhone 5 launch but I suppose I must take your word for it.
